Can an ARS 4.5.2 server access the same database that a ARS 5.1.2 (no
patches) system uses? The DB is Oracle 8.1.7 running on the same server
that s running 5.1.2.

No, that is not possible. The server does a check on db-version (AR db-version) on startup, and the 4.5.2 and 5.1.2 does not have the same version.

The CONTROL table holds the version number the server does a query againt on startup.
