Rick,
Well, there were a couple of more or less new things presented as well as
some interesting information.
The MARS products, except for the Migrator are going in to a ARS Developer
Kit. A workflow debugger will also be included as well as the Application
Explorer. How the licensing for this is not decided, but excisting MARS
customers will get it for free.
The main focus was on version 6 that should be release sometime around new
year.
These are some of the more interesting things in version 6:
- You can add your own fields and groups to control Row Level Access.
- Applications should now work more like "applications".
When you work with an application you will only see things in the
application.
You can define entry-points for users and access-points for other
applications that they can integrate to.
The applications is supposed to be easy to export/import on another system.
If I understood it correctly, you could even export data with the
application...
- When you export an application, workflow can be set as read-only, meaning
that the admin importing this application can not modify the workflow
except by disabling it.
You can also export the application encrypted, and the workflow can not be
copied or read.
- If you create applications and sell them, you can leverage on Remedys
licensing mechanism with Server-, Fixed- and Floating-licenses.
You are supposed to be able to generate license keys for your customers on
Remedys Web that they can apply to their system using the Remedy License
Tool.
- Performance enhancement for Mid-Tier.
They talked a little bit about the focus in version 7.
The focus will be to make Mid-Tier look even more like an ordinary Web-
application and make it more "light-weight".
Unfortunately I was unable to establish contact with more than a handful of
ARSList-subscribers, but we had a good time anyway!
We had a lot to eat and drink, and the Gala Party Night ended (for me at
least) about 4 a clock in the morning. Rumors has it that some people went
straight from the hotel bar to the first presentation at 9 a clock in the
morning...
I stayed on for a couple of days and had the opportunity to visit both
Capri and Pompeji! Nice!
I am sure I missed a lot of interesting information in this short email
from the top of my head, but hopefully someone else can fill in.
Best Regards - Misi, RRR AB, http://www.rrr.se

More on v7(codenamed Thor):
- Even more point n'click. "From a process chart to an application in just one click"('save as' -> Remedy Application). If our managers sees this, no more need for developers ;-)
- Full unicode support
- ...
And yes; the Gala Night ended late, to late :) But cool to see some Remedy people that late; Carol Dirig and Jim Peterson joined the night club trip :-)

One important thing with v6.0; You can only login from one ip-adress with a user. Sharing a user accross several clients will not work. But from one ip-address you can login several times. This does not affect admin users.
()
Grouping servers into a server-group, ideally for fail-over as this is now buildt into the server. You can set server A as escalationserver and server B as approvalserver. If B failes, A will take over the approvalserver.
()
Floating licenses can be shared between servers grouped in a server-group.

Some more thing not mentioned, Flashboard will be integrated within the ars
admin/user, including 5 free flashboards.
Enhanced statistics, written to ars forms, stat about how an application is
used...,licences..., about 45 new stat functions.
Monitor ar system with the help of SNMP network monitoring tool.
Autogenerating of the field layout in a form (for fixed web views in first
place).
Personal homepage for each user, as it is an arsform, it can be easy
modified, I think this will work as the user pref form.
And there is even more..

Is it true also for Web Users? Or is it restricted to client-server mode?
Thanks,

I asked this question.
The reply was that if the Browser and the Remedy client was run on the
same machine, it would work...
If two browsers on different machines login with the same user it will not
work.
I do not as yet know if this affect read-licensed users.

So if one of my datacomm/telecomm guys is logged in via the User tool in
his office with the Console up, and he goes out on site to fix a
problem, he will NOT be able to log in on the customer's machine via
mid-tier and update the ticket and check for any new ones that pertain
to the building he is visiting?? That just sucks, to put it as bluntly
as possible. I would consider that a limitation that we would be
unwilling to live with in our multiple-location campus environment. Our
techs need to be able to access their tickets from anywhere on campus,
and it should not matter if they left the Support Console open in the
User tool back on their desktop machine. If that is hard coded into
6.0, we will be stuck on 5.x forever!!
