But you could also have 5 people using 1 'Fixed' license (i.e., everyone in the "Help Desk" group uses 1 fixed ID, "helpdeskuser"), thus, allowing 5 or however many people to use 1 'Fixed' license. This way there would only be 1 fixed user using 1 fixed license on 1 computer, no exceptions. I think this is one of the scenarios they are trying to do away with.

Okay, help me understand something.

How does limiting 1 user to 1 IP accomplish anything? As I understand it, if
I have 5 floating licenses, and I have 5 people log into the system with the
same user, but different client machines, would that still use the 5
licenses? If that's the case, I don't see the logic in the change.

Help me out.

Take care and have a good weekend all,

Lars

The first and foremost "honest" scenario I can see is when a user is having
problems and I have to login as them to attempt to replicate the issue. I
suppose that I could ask them to log out of the tool, but we all know that
many users feel more comfortable explaining an issue as they walk through
it... so, I would be in favor of 3 sources vs. 1 source. Although, if they
enabled some type of 'login as user' functionality for an administrator
account... ;-)

take care!

Hi All,

Let us give Remedy som contructive criticism then.

My suggestion would be to let any user login from a maximum of 3 sources at
any one time.

This will probably take care of most honest scenarios, and I can see a lot
of those.

At the same time it will not give any dishonest company too much slack.

But their checking should include the various client-types... hopefully
this restriction will only apply to 'user tool' logins.

What client-type does arsperl show as?

Please respond to
arslist

Right, except most of my arsperl stuff is stored on the server (one ip
address), so it shouldn't be an issue in that case... and if you have
arsperl/cgi applications that access your server, that code is also stored
and run in a central location, the web server... know what I mean?

ARSPerl is still a client. You will end up facing the same issue.

If i'm not wrong..correct me if so, I think if user X is logged in on one PC
and try to log in to another, the user will get a message 'You are logged on
in ARS on computer...' Do to want to end that session? or somethink like
that, if that's right, i can't see any reason to worry so much about users
logged in on computer A, and if they start a new session on computer B when
they are on visit at a customer and want to work with ars, they will be able
to do that, but have to relogin on computer A when they are back..that's the
way I understood it will work.

()
One important thing with v6.0; You can only login from one ip-adress with a
user. Sharing a user accross several clients will not work. But from one
ip-address you can login several times. This does not affect admin users.

()
Grouping servers into a server-group, ideally for fail-over as this is now
buildt into the server. You can set server A as escalationserver and server
B as approvalserver. If B failes, A will take over the approvalserver.

()
Floating licenses can be shared between servers grouped in a server-group.

Maybe Remedy want to prevent sites from sharing a login with a fix licence,
used by many ars-users? Can't see any other logic.

I don't think that we are going to have to work that hard (or load our
systems up with user "state" checking) to deal with the new license
dynamics that Remedy has in beta for ARS 6.0. It sounds like there will
be a "feature" that will allow someone at a remote location to take over
the session they left active in their office (also helpful if you need
to log in from home after forgetting to log out at work), so the
restriction is more on the login name than the IP address.. which can be
changed on demand but is limited to one current IP at a time. As long
as I don't get calls to log someone off of the session in their office
so that they can log on somewhere else; I do NOT do on-demand logoffs
now, and I don't want to start. I'll have to watch that my ARSPerl
pages don't choke on this, but right now they read data with a read-only
account and force a mid-tier login whenever someone wants to drill down
into something and update it. Most of my ARSPerl pages are designed for
customer submission with a read license on a submitter-locked system
anyway, so they have no real need to change workstations in mid-session
anyway.

This functionality (transferring your current session to another
workstation on login) would answer ALL of my concerns about our field
service staff who keep the User tool open on their desktop all day but
go out to customer locations to actually fix things. As long as they
can start the day in the Support Console, lock their workstation and go
out on site, and if necessary log in to mid-tier to record their work
and pick up new tickets from a customer workstation, they will be fine.
It is almost safe to assume (okay, I'm just hoping) that they will log
out of mid-tier on the customer workstation when finished, which will
drop their session completely and release the license (possibly before
it would have timed out if a floater, which actually helps us). When
they return to their desk, I would expect that as soon as they start
poking around in the Support Console and do something that needs a
license, the User tool will use it's cached authentication credentials
to create a new licensed session, just like it does if you had a
floating license that released on you from leaving the client inactive
longer than the timeout. I would NOT want it to force a relogin, since
there are times when the consultants are busy typing in the worklog on
more than one ticket and get a call and run out the door; I certainly
don't want them losing any data that existed only on the User client
when they get back and start working tickets again. They already have
enough problems/complaints with that (session timeout - detected only
when they try to save something) from my mid-tier client users.

If this is what Remedy delivers in 6.0, we will not have any problem
with it in our production environment. Of course I won't personally be
able to open simultaneous sessions for one account on every client and
platform that we support and step them all through new workflow
together, but of course as an admin I can create as many identical
accounts for that purpose as I want - they just won't be able to test
using LDAP authentication (the LDAP administrators don't like having too
many test accounts). I guess we'll just have to wait and see what we
get in our stockings from Remedy next month; hopefully it won't be coal!
From the previews we got at the BMC Software Forum this week, it will be
a lot of tools to make our lives easier, not harder.

Calming down and going back to work on documentation...

Hi All,

The thing that I enjoyed most at RUC2003 was meeting some ARSListers. I have taken some photos that you can view here:

http://www.elrefaey.com/photos/Sorrento

I have down-sized the photos to 640x480 to suit web viewing. If you're in a photo and you want a copy of the original (and that's specially for Lars who kindly took the Sorrento tour with me) (resolution 1980x1240, almost 1mb/photo) please e-mail me off-list at ashraf@elrefaey.com.

Enjoy,

But their checking should include the various client-types... hopefully
this restriction will only apply to 'user tool' logins.

What client-type does arsperl show as?

Please respond to
arslist

Right, except most of my arsperl stuff is stored on the server (one ip
address), so it shouldn't be an issue in that case... and if you have
arsperl/cgi applications that access your server, that code is also stored
and run in a central location, the web server... know what I mean?

ARSPerl is still a client. You will end up facing the same issue.

Enjoy,
