When the Canadian’s call an election they conduct a process similar to a US Census. SHL had a contract to provide the computer networks, servers, desktops and software for the Election Offices. Local Election officials are designated in advance. When an Election is scheduled the officials have to rent an office in their district. They would contact the Central Election Office and the profile of the local office would be entered into a Remedy application. Notifications would then be sent from Remedy to the warehouse where the computer equipment is stored in a large crate for the local office. North American Van Lines would also be notified from Remedy to move the equipment to the local office. The local SHL Office would be notified to receive and setup the equipment. Status of all these actions was recorded in Remedy. The Local Official would hire staff and those actions were recorded in Remedy. Once an Office was in operation they would be sent a list of the people in their district and they would canvas the district to update the list and report daily to Election HQ. Candidates would then be provided the lists for mailings and calls. During the Election period the local Officials and their staff are paid and that all flowed through the Remedy application.
One of the challenges of the project was the requirement that the application had to be bi-lingual on the fly. The first application was implemented in 1993 in version 1.2. I worked with Doug to get Drop-Down Menus added to the product and I devised a system were each view and each menu had both English and French labels and values (they were also numerated). The agent could switch between languages by switching views and with the exception of text and diary fields a report of the data in a record could be viewed or printed in either language. I updated the application for a total of three elections before I left SHL to join VISTA IT.

Ed,
I'm curious, could you tell us more about the "Canadian Election System"?

In the last ten years I have built unusual Remedy systems like
1. the Canadian Election system
2. Contracts Management System
3. Purchase Order system
4. Network monitoring system (before Tivoli and CA)
5. Telephone switch alarm system
6. Pager activation system
7. Distribution Center Equipment Maintenance System (Conveyor belts and forklift preventive maintenance, etc.)
8. Facilities Maintenance and Management system
9. Venture Capital Portfolio Management system
10.Numerous non-IT Asset Management systems
11.HR systems
12.University class room scheduling and configuration system
13.Hotel room maid service and facilities management system
14.Numerous provisioning systems for telecom and wireless companies
15.Material Catalog system

Subject: Your Remedy Applications
I was just sitting here wondering what other applications I could do with
Remedy, but Im drawing a blank.
So I decided to ask you guys to see what applications have you made in
Remedy? Not modifications of
HelpDesk, etc, but actual applications.
So far I have thought of a Knowledge Base application.
Jose Leon
