Most of the comments on this thread are correct. Notifier was replaced by
Alert and it is an independant install. On the server side, there are no
longer separate processes to handle notifications, and the notification are
now stored in the database along with everything else. I believe this will
increase the reliability a great deal. And, you CAN still use the old
Notifier tool against a 5.1 server.
