Can anybody suggest me that all customized applications will work with
5.1 that were in 4.5 and are all the forms in 4.5 when upgraded will be
web enabled or require some modification to be web enabled?

Hi

Among some of the changes you would have to do upon upgrade to version 5.1 is convert any Active Links's that have macros in them into Active Link actions.. This is possible through a conversion utility built within the new ARS 5.x Admin tool. Doing this will get your application closer to getting deployed on the web version - Mid-Tier while retaining most of the user tool functionality. Macros get overlooked by the web version.

Also there would be need to create new views - web views to all the forms that have to be visible in the web version and give them appropriate web aliases. While creating web views, it is generally recommended to create views with Fixed field positioning rather than Relative.

I have heard that having fields with blank label names create a few problems on the web views, so avoid fields with blank field names on the web views.

Hope some of the above info helps,

Regards

I have seen Helpdesk 4.0.3 work with ARS 5.1 with no problems. The only limitation being that the web enablement of the helpdesk application would have to be done manually, if you are to use the Mid-Tier version 5.1, and without converting the AL's that convert the macros into AL actions, you would loose functionality that works on the user tool.

The database structure does undergo a lot of changes, as there are new features introduced, but all these happen smoothly during the upgrade of the ARS database. You do not immidiatly need to follow it with the Heldesk 5 upgrade. However if you do upgrade your Helpdesk application to version 5, the web bit would happen almost painlessly as all the required web views and the web application which will be called RSMWeb will be already in place.

If you are physically migrating from one physical box to another, I'm wondering if you have considered your licensing issue. You just cant use the existing licenses on a new box without having to apply for a purge and regenerating new licenses for the new box. Since the licenses are dependent on the CPU ID of UNIX servers this has to be done. You can ask your reseller to assist you in getting your licenses purged.

If you intend to use the Remedy Migrator, while its an excellent tool for migration, you must take care that you use the appropriate version as Remedy doesn't like version conflicts between the ARS Server and its migrator, so you may have to upgrade your old box first to the desired version, and then on the new box install the same version 5.1 and use the Remedy Migrator tool designed for this version.

If you need to know anything more please write to me at joeremedy@yahoo.com as I may not be checking this email while on my leave which starts today. I'm leaving for Bombay in India and will be in India till the 9th of January.

Good luck to you...

I realize it's a small thing, but if you have a custom app that has multiple
table fields, you need to watch the new table field default actions for the
initial refresh and subsequent refreshes. When upgrading, the default for
the initial refresh is Select First, Fire Workflow....while the Second
Refresh is Retain Selection, Fire Workflow. Depending on how your table
fields refresh this could cause you some headaches. Easy fix, but just
something to watch out for.
