Heh, heh, heh. It costs a *lot* more than just the purchase price. If
you buy it you have to buy support too! On top of that it doesn't
usually rev as fast as the server so you have upgrade issues. On top of
that past versions have had some nightmarish upgrade paths. Especially
if you make your own modifications.
On the other hand, you get what you pay for and nothing will get you
going faster than buying it and having an installation contract. If
time is of the essence and not money, go with it. Otherwise it isn't
really too hard to roll your own although it will take you several tries
and quite a bit of time to get there. Unless you've done it before.
I'd say an experienced developer could install and customize CRM into
almost anything you want in 2 weeks but that same person would take
three times as long to do it from scratch...assuming you can tell him
exactly what you want which you probably can't so he'll have to come
back a time or two. But it would still be maybe 3 months and 6 weeks of
work which, counting support, is pretty much a wash $$-wise.
That's my take on it. You pays your money up front for speed to rollout
or you pays it over a longer period to get a custom system.
