Hello fellow Dudes and Dudettes:
I have a decision to make today. I need to decide whether to upgrade my web server to ARWeb 4.0, patch 59 or to Mid-Tier 5.0.1.
The ARS Server was just upgraded from 4.5.2 --> 5.0.1. The forms built in 4.5.2 are accessible via ARWeb 4.0, un-patched and work as designed. As expected, forms built in 5.x are not. I realize that ARWeb 4.0 patch 59 should recognize and open forms built in 5.x. But, how flaky is it, etc.?
Has anyone, done the suggested, but not supported nor QA’d installation of Mid-Tier on their ARWeb server.
Tech Support suggested that I install Mid-Tier on a different server altogether, but if I absolutely had to install Mid-Tier on my ARWeb server (because its in the DMZ), then I would need to do the following:
Note: Installing Mid-Tier on an ARWeb server is completely incompatible and wouldn’t work.
1. Uninstall Servlet Exec 2.2
2. Uninstall ARWeb 4.0
3. Install Servlet exec 4.1.x
4. Install Mid-Tier.
Anyone, been brave enough to try it?
Main Question: Patch ARWeb 4.0 or install Mid-Tier 5.0.1?
Here is my current platform.
ARS Server Platform
Windows 2000
SQL Server 7.x w/patches
Remedy ARS 5.01 unpatched
Web Platform
Windows 2000
IE 5.0
ARWeb 4.0, unpatched

Michelle,
If you want the ARWeb functionality without the effort of doing Mid-Tier development then patch ARWeb.
If you want the Mid-Tier functionality and can afford the effort of doing Mid-Tier development (there are some steps necessary to make existing forms work on the Mid-Tier) then you have to go with the Mid-Tier.
The "Fast" path is to patch ARWeb. Upgrade the server, and install Mid-Tier. Then move each application forward to the Mid-Tier as you have time/priority.
I currently have a dev box using ARWeb 4.0 patch 52 (59 was not available when I started down this road) and Mid-Tier v5.0.1 running on a host with no known issues. (Win2k server, IIS v5, New Atlanta v4.1[or whatever came with Mid-Tier]) The only "non-documented" step I did was to patch ARWeb, Stop the web server, un-install the New Atlanta that came with ARWeb, then install Mid-Tier and new version of New Atlanta. Worked like a champ for me. (ARWeb did not know the difference between the old and the new version of New Atlanta Servelet Exec.)
A test environment is always a very good idea.

Thank you for the advice, Matt. Sounds promising. It sounds like the suggested way is to go with the ARWeb patch.
But, let me make sure I understand the other part....
You were able to leave both ARWeb and Mid-Tier running on the same box, simply by:
1. Uninstalling the Servlet Exec 2.2,
2. Installing ServletExec 4.1 (version that came with Mid-tier)
3. finally installing mid-tier?
This would be great if this is the case.
Thanks again

Michelle,
Yep. For me it was that easy. (I hope you have the same experience.) If you want to be very "safe" add a reboot after you un-install Servlet Exec 2.x and again after you install the new Servlet Exec. (I think I had to do that, but I'm not positive.)
Just for the record, running ARWeb and Mid-Tier on the same host is not strictly a supported combination for Peregrine. However the ability for ARWeb to use a higher version of Servlet Exec is mostly bases on the backwards compatibility of that product. (ARWeb and Mid-Tier do not use the same URL naming conventions so they do not have "collisions" at the web server level.)
