Hi,
Does anyone know where the temporary notification files created by the
Remedy system are stored on a Unix machine? The ones I mean are basically
the mail message generated by a Notification action which is then stored in
a temporary directory before being sent out as an email. They have a 7 digit
name if I remember correctly which is made up of random numbers and letters.
Regards,
Simon Meadows

Hi Simon,
What version of UNIX? This is what I have:
AIX - /var/spool/mail OR /var/spool/mqueue
HP - /var/adm/syslog
I may be worthwhile looking at your sendmail.cf file which specifies the
directory that contains the log files.
Mike.

Simon,
I think your after the following, but if not sorry. It depends on your mail
system. On Unix [Solaris] and if sendmail is in use the directory is
typically /var/spool/mqueue. You will see the option sent in the sendmail.cf
file, usually located in
/etc/mail/
e.g
# queue directory
O QueueDirectory=/var/spool/mqueue
The files like you say start with letters and contain digits etc... e.g
df...,qf... etc
all of which have a special meaning to sendmail. If you use another mail
program It may put it in the
same location but you'll have to look at that documentation.
If all is OK, the mails go out quite quickly, but it there is a delay [e.g
timeout] then one would see files in this
directory. To view the queue you can use the command mailq, which puts it
into a readable format. Alternatively you
can go to the directory directly and check it out. I think this is what you
want when you mention temporary location, but perhaps not.
I hope this is what your after.
Regards,
Kevin

You can also look at /var/log/maillog on Solaris.

On all Unixes of which I am familiar, mqueue is where mail sits until it
can be delivered after the first try has failed. I wouldn't
characterize this as a temporary space although this may be what the
original poster had in mind.
/var/log/maillog if it exists would be a log file, i.e. a diary of what
the mail software has done, not the mail itself.
