Hello Listers,
I have a query, i want to know if it is possible to create a chat room
by creating a display form maybe and some workflow.
Has anyone acheived this and would like to share some ideas with me or
maybe just point me into the right direction.
can it be possible is the first question ?
what do you think..

Listers...
Talking about chat rooms, I was wondering if anyone has created or intends creating a Chat room on channels like Yahoo or Mirc. Does anyone think (like I do) that such rooms would be useful to Remedy Administrators / Developers to exchange ideas online real time? And even transfer files (defs, exe's, etc.) wherever needed...
Off course this would and could not replace the AR List as chat channels could be useful to only communicate to users logged on and would be difficult to get users to respond to offline messages. Anyone interested in maybe hosting a room perhaps on Yahoo, MSN or Mirc. I'm wondering if it's legal to host chat rooms on public free chat channels to discuss a product that is sold commercially?

Almost,
The biggest issue is how to get your "Instant" massage.
You still have to poll the message server for new messages.
In 5.0 there are some interesting options.
For one, you can have an ActiveLink fire on a interval.
Still not really a chat window.
OR
in 5.0, you could just have a View Field displaying a web client of a commercially available Chat client :)

Joe,
I'd be for it, my only request would be that it not be MSN as I can't get the messenger app to work across our firewall....

You could do it by using a support form and a display only form and use the
auto refresh function.
Have the a table display each new record as a new line in the "chat window"
with the auto refresh function. It is rather crude... but effective.

Hi Ajay,Martin+others
Personaly i think its a smashing idea...we have untold depth of experience
and skills accessing this forum on a daily basis and im sure ( well
certainly i would be prepared to offer my skills in a project of this sort )
many out there would feel that we teh Remedy community at large could all
benefit from having a online forum where
assistance, exchanges, feedback, help, etc could be available esp. since at any
given moment only half the present remedy list subscribers are awake and
having someone online to assist you could only be a major plus!
What say ye all?

Come one, Come all!
(No restrictions what-so-ever)
I've opened a chat room on Yahoo! so that we can experiment and see how
this works~
The room is located under Computers & Internet, and the room is called ARS
Chat Room.
See you there!

Joe,
This type of thing has been tried before. (It did not go over well.)

I'm not suggesting that this is a "good group" or even a "good idea", but I thought it worthy to note that others have attempted this before. I know there are other "groups" like this out there. I just don't have them at the tips of my fingers.

Ajay & Mark,
ARS 5.x
If you create a View field on a form and then set the value to your IM
path on your local system, won't this launch the IM program (or MSN or
Yahoo...etc)?
Then the issue of a chat room after the fact is joining the chat session.
Who initiates the session ?
Regards...Gidd

I don't think that writing a new record for each statement would be a good idea. That would eat up the database fast.
I would almost have a form with a large text field that is read only, have a small text field to write to below that, and have an active link that fires on a button to add what you put in the small text field plus your username to the large text field, with formatting like what you would expect in a chatroom. Then have an active link that fires on an interval to reload the text field every few seconds, if possible. I haven't tried firing active links on an interval yet, so I don't know if you can set it to happen every 3 seconds, or if it would be a huge performance hit.
