perspective from some of the rest of you who may disagree with me.
Sanitizing humor to make it politically correct is, to paraphrase Mark
Twain, like dissecting a frog; in that it can be done, but in the
process, the frog tends to die.

Also, making humor offense-free is like telling a beautiful woman to
dress so that men won't lust after her. Some men will lust regardless
of her attire, some men will try not to, depending on how she's dressed,
and some men are dead. Just kidding, but it illustrates my point.
There isn't a joke that won't offend someone, because some people are
looking to be offended, and choose to take offense at certain things. I
think that such people need to upgrade their outlook on life, rather
than the rest of us jumping through hoops to accommodate it.

The somewhat more valid point has also been raised that this isn't a
humor forum, and that the Email Nazis may cut off legitimate use because
of too much off-topic subject matter.

May I propose a solution that will satisfy most groups? How about if we
simply discipline ourselves to keep the humor to a couple of posts a
week, so that it doesn't turn into Humor Central (lots of web sites for
jokes already), and to keep the jokes clean and relatively tasteful.
We're all grownups and professionals here, so I think we can find a
compromise that works. If this isn't it, that's fine, but let's find
one and move on.

Like Rick I have held back on commenting.

Going way back to when Roman had the list, yes even before Dan, there was an
unwritten "rule" that any humor had to have humor in the subject line. Also
any job listings are supposed to have Job or Career in the subject. Every
so often the list would be mailed a reminder to use this approach, there was
one from Joel not too long ago, usually when this debate pops up. And it
has many times before and will again if you stay on the list long enough.

The reason for the "coding" of the subject is so that we can use email
filters to direct our mail to an appropriate container. For me it is
"Humor" and I read it at my leisure. For others it might be "trash" so they
don't have to deal with it.

What ever you do, do it and lets move on once again to the more important
things in life.

Hi Listers,

There is an almost delicious irony to all this. After all we had been
attacked 9-11-01 by a group of very intolerent people, who want to not only
censor us based upon their narrow view, they do not feel we have a right to
exist in a world based upon their narrow view. Rather than petition their
governments to cease relations with the west, they prefer to simply cease
the west. This is not a political commentary, I am merely proposing the
question.... Where does it end?
Where does stiffling the voice, creativity, culture, and joy others
for the self esteem of the masses end? This nation was founded on the
principle of individuality, taking responsibility for ourselves and our
destiny. It was founded on freedom of choice. Choice of how and if we choose
to pray or not pray, and most of all... how we choose for ourselves how we
wish to live our lives.
I happen to delete many of the posts to the list as they don't
pertain to what I may currently be working on. I certainly have no intention
of unsubscribing to the list simply because each post does not unlock the
mysteries of the AR system. I just delete em. I take responsibility and
control of my life by using one of the most powerful tools granted to man in
the 21st century... the [DELETE] button.
Where does it end? Does it end with not having to wade thru emails
that don't pertain to ARS 4.5.2 or 5.0? Why should I have to wade through
the irrelevant emails to catch the information useful only to me? The
problem with meeting the needs thru the lowest common denominator is
that.... its usually pretty damn low. Sometimes a post having nothing to
do with what I am currently working on, may have a use in the future, so I
place it in the folder marked ARLIST GOODIES. Its amazing what ends up being
valuable.

It's got nothing to do with censorship.

It's about wading through irrelevant emails to catch the useful
information. And this group is here to help people - not to
make their life harder.

Plus - there are some companies who monitor emails.
If the number of humour emails doesn't decrease - it could
put my subscription to this list in jeopardy.

I took Thursday & Friday off work - and I had 200 emails
from the ARSList in that time. Not all entirely relevant.

It's rather selfish of people to say, "I'm all right, Jack."

Listers,

Here's my 2 cents worth... :) I've created a "Friday Humor" forum on my
ARSList archive site...
(http://www.mattreinfeldt.com/forums/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=humor) If
you've got something funny that you want to share with the list, feel free
to post it there! You can add attachments (1 per post) and use inline
images (see: using Markup tags in the FAQ)...

Any questions, feel free to shoot them my way!

Hi

I do agree with Rick's views.

While this is a forum to discuss the AR System and all its complexities, related issues, etc., it could also be considered as a small social group of professionals united with a common purpose. And whoever says that a little bit of humor cannot be accommodated at even in a professional environment?

There may have been a cause for concern if more than 10% of Fridays mails were non-ARS related, but personally I do not think it is so. Going by the trend on the past 2 or 3 weeks, we got about 3 or 4 mails out of probably nearly 70 mails that we receive on a Friday that were jokes or non-ARS related. Which keeps this figure relatively low - maybe 5%? Doesn't really look that bad.

I do agree with some of the concerns raised here though. I've lived in a cross cultural environments all my life and have noticed that negative discussions (which includes jokes) on religious matters do tend to raise a few eye-brows. It does tend to hurt the concerned sect of people and personally I wouldn't think that's fair. Unfortunately this list isn't restricted to just the east or the west, but is global.

So if we have to post a few jokes on a Friday which I even welcome, it would be nice to consider, especially in the wake of our current political tide, to refrain from jokes targeting a particular community or a group of people. Maybe another time, another place, these same jokes would be well received. For now I wouldn't think 'little Johnny' jokes or even adult jokes would get a negative reaction here as long as our main perspective to source valuable information on Remedy's ARS is not lost.

Nothing wrong with a little humor on a Friday. Yet it's not worth hurting people over it, sounds a bit selfish to be doing that.

Clarification.

I get this list in digest format. This means that I get 1 email (sometimes
2 depending on traffic) at the end of the day. If I wanted to censor the
jokes, I would delete the whole digest.

Well, then couldn't you just skip over them? I don't understand why a few
people are making such an issue of this, does it really cause that much
grief? There's all kinds of noise on this list constantly, for example, and
not to make a big deal of it, but there's about 15-20 emails today about
people not being able to read email from Rick Cook. I appreciate Rick's
contributions, and I *can* read his posts, but I certainly don't care about
the current thread, and I've deleted about 20 emails today without reading
them. If I were receiving a digest of the list, I'd simply skip past
anything that I didn't care about.
