We aren't going to be using the evil word "Help Desk" anymore. I am trying
to come up with other terms. I have come up with Solution Center, Client
Services, and Technical Support. Does anyone have any cool ideas they would
like to share?

I don't know how cool it is, but we use "Support Center" for our
formerly-known-as Help Desk.

We are going through this process at the University. We are changing our
name from the Customer Service Center to some other name. My suggestion was
Academic Support Services. It actually was considered for some time until
management used the initials in a brochure :)

Our domain is called Solutioncenter.
We were part of the Consolidated Call Center, which is now called the
Integrated Support Center.
We have settled on the name SPAWAR Technical Information Center which
implies more than just "help desk".
It's also a snappy acronym. (STIC...like, get on the STIC!)
Just more info to chew on.

Well the real problem lies with Management. They hire cheap staff to staff
the help desk, then the help desk becomes known as the Helpless Desk. So
management try to give the department a face lift / new image by giving it a
new name. I see it ALL the time - I have been in the IT industry for 15
years and it never fails. If they would spend some money and hire people
who know the difference between a virus and a monitor then they wouldn't
have these problems.
I will get off the soap box now someone else needs it.

The big problem with Help Desk is that it automatically implies "Technical Support" because that has been the historical nature of the Help Desk. However, many companies are moving away from the Technical Support only model to a call center where not only Technology Support questions are triaged, but also Human Resources, Maintenance and other types of requests for information or help. No one wants to call the "Help Desk" for an answer to an HR question, but many organizations are going to the "One Question, One Call" support model and Help Desk simply doesn't fit.

You think that is bad? Southampton University Computing Services has the
official acronym of "SUCS", so our Remedy installation is SUCS ARS.
We use the expression "Help Desk" for the drop-in places we have spread
around the University sites, each staffed on a half-day basis, and
"ServiceLine" for our 'phone and email center, which does not have users
turning up in person.

We're kind of in the same boat here at UTK. We're still using the term
HelpDesk but our department needs a new name. There are three different
HelpDesks, one is the LADS HD (LAN and Desktop Support) another is the NMC
HD (Network Management Center) so we have to come up with a name to
differentiate us from the other two. We're totally stumped! We can't say
Student Computing or something like that because we also help Faculty and
Staff with their e-mail and dialup accounts. If we ever come up with
something, I'll let you guys know!

The term RTFM for a helpdesk is already in use. Our version stands for Real
Time Fault Management. At least that is what we tell our clients.
