I've been asked to perform a survey by a client who purchased Remedy's "Hot Backup Software", thinking they were getting a system that would automatically bring a backup Remedy server online if the primary died.

How has everyone addressed the issue of a backup Remedy server, specifically syncing data between the two? Has anyone done this without DSO? Has anyone actually swapped to their backup? What was the experience like?

Any info, comments, experiences, etc. is helpful-
thanks-

-Drake

the backup server database in standby mode and FTP the logs across
regularly, automatically. These logs are then applied automatically.

We also copy all .arqs and ar.conf across daily.

We can swap from one to the other with an outage of about an hour, with no
loss of data. We are now perfecting procedures so this swap can be handled
by our computer operators, who have no Remedy and limited database skills.

Further info available on request.

We use a system that our VAR has produced. The Standby Server replcates all
changes made on the Primary server in real time. It takes approximately
15mins to move to the Standby Server.

The only reason it takes that long is that we have to redistribute the ar
file around all of our program servers. (We hold the ar file on the program
servers and when the user starts remedy it copies down the ar file first)

Regards,

Phil

which is as far as I know, avaiblbe when you have more then 100,000 US
dollars of licensed products. At this point you can have a second set of
licences to use as stand-by so that you can have fall-over or spare servers.

I haven't got confirmation as yet, but I believe this refers to the Hot
spare licensing offered by Remedy. Drake?

I think what is be talked about is Remedy 'Hot Spare' License agreement,
which is as far as I know, avaiblbe when you have more then 100,000 US
dollars of licensed products. At this point you can have a second set of
licences to use as stand-by so that you can have fall-over or spare servers.

I would like to obtain just as much information as you are willing to share.
We will be getting a copy of "Hot Backup" once we make another software
purchase from Remedy and don't know much about it at this point but are
eager to set it up and see what the benefits (and drawbacks) are...

Thanks!

duplicate licenses to run on a different host id. These duplicates will be
expire with your support contract, at which point you will get new ones
provided you renew your support contract.

The mechanism we use is all at the database level and nothing to do with
Remedy really.

The primary database creates archived redo logs of 500Mb each. We have an
in-house written c program that FTPs these files across to our standby box,
and ensures they arrive, retires failures, and stuff like that.

The standby box has it's database in standby mode. We have a script that
runs and tells Oracle to recover the database. Oracle then goes off &
finds the redo logs and applies them until it runs out of logs. The script
then sleeps for a bit then runs again, by which time another load of redo
logs have arrived and Oracle can apply these.

Initially you have to set up the standby box by restoring a backup of the
live system, and then apply logs to keep it up to date.

In the event of a failure we apply all outstanding logs to the standby
database, take a cold back up (belt & braces) then open it up.

Clients find the new server thanks to our Wins system. Our Remedy servers
are nnnnn2 and nnnnn3, whilst Remedy always runs with an alias of nnnnn1.
Clients look for nnnnn1. Wins holds a reference for nnnnn1 with an IP
address of either nnnnn2 or nnnnn3. So by updating Wins we direct the
clients to whichever server we want. Wins holds no reference to nnnnn2 or
nnnnn3.

More details available if required. I have no problems sharing
information, as it doesn't really belong to anyone anyway. i'm sure if you
though about this long enough you would come up with something similar, but
there is no point in re-inventing the wheel. As they say, no-one invents
anything in physics, they just discover it.
