problems!!!

Remedy sent me to an FTP site that had the patches (patch 776) I would need
to solve some of my performance problems. I had to wait uintil today to
load them (of course when Remedy $upport is not available).

After renaming all the appropriate files , loading the new files and
restarting my services, the Notification service wouldn't restart.

"could not start the Notification Service on \\swremedy."

Error 0005: Access is denied

Anyone out there have any idea what the problem is???

I can always back out the changes -- and hope things work ok.

I logged in as myself and I'm one of the server administrators. All the
files looked ok with the exception of one.

I didn't back out the entire patch, which may really cause me some problems.
I reinstalled the old NTSERVD file and the service started, so I at least
know which file caused the problem.

Microsoft Technet said :

"These error messages can occur if the ImagePath string value has a data
value
that contains a long file name with spaces in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\"

Welllllll there is no way I was going to do any editing to the Registry
without one of the Net Admin gurus standing beside me. I'm brave.... not
stupid! :)

There were no spaces in any of the file names, but the NTSERVD.exe file was
in upper case where it used to be in lower case... so I changed that out
first.

I think to do this job really well, you have to be a combination Support
Person, Designer, Programmer, DBA and NT Admin.

Has anyone else installed patch 766 (ver 3.2.1) and had this problem?

Sounds to me like a permissions issue. Are you running this on NT?
Make sure everything is executable. Make sure you're logged in as
an administrator.

Normally, I'd let other people answer this one, since I really don't
know the answer. But it is Sunday, and you'll be lucky to get a
response.

I hope all is working well since you backed out the ntservd patch. I just
wanted to let you know that I have also applied the 776 server patch to our ARS
3.2.1; NT 4.0 SP4/Y2Kfixes; MSSQL 6.5 SP5a, server. So far (imagine me knocking
on a huge piece of a California Redwood) we haven't had any problems or
downtime.

I didn't run into any problems. However, it did peek my curiosity on which ID
is starting the Notification service. Did you get a chance to check which ID
was starting it, under Control Panel-Services-Startup? Sometimes, NT ID issues
are not noticeable until something changes in the environment, i.e., a reboot,
upgrade, stop-start of services.

We were running fine here, until we found that our server team deleted our NT
administrator ID, which was used to start several services. NT services will
still run, until we had to start and stop them again.

Hope that points you in the right direction. Otherwise, good luck to you,
Michelle

Even if there are no spaces, you could still have problems if any of the
directory names do not follow the 8.3 specification. I.e. production would
need to be specified as produc~1 in the registry.

I ran into a similar problem when installing HD 3.0 on top of ARS 4.0
(installed into C:\Program Files\Remedy) Since HD 3.0 does not understand
long paths, I had to find and fix every instance of Program Files and
change them to Progra~1. Not jus tin the registry but also in the DB! Since
it was a development system, I ended up wiping and reinstalling, specifying
C:\Progra~1\Remedy\COMDesk as the installation directory.
