"Nothing will change, the arslist will go on for free, blah, blah. We are
not selling information users have provided for free. . .
"The archives are gone and cannot be provided for free." Oh thats convient.
Why did arslist have to be moved from the Buffalo server? Why, so you can
charge for what it was providing for free.
What a jip. Please spare me the "arslist is a great resource and Dan is to
thank" Arslist is a great resource, thanks to dan and everyone of us who
subscribes to and posts to it. I dont care what hardware and software the
list runs on, without people posting, its worth a damn. My gratitude for
someone setting up and manging the lists only goes so far. In case you
havent noticed, Dan, is taking the list we made great and the list we have
come to rely on and now charging us for it. Dan why didnt you mention the
archive issue earlier? What an all out scam. Egotistical capitalism is not
what made the arslist great, quite the opposisite, more like people helping
others for free.
Ahh, I am so dissapointed with this wwrug. I can't believe Vistait and
Remedy have associated themselves with this fiasco. "The archives are gone
and cannot be provided for free."
Dan, explain to me how this works. WWrug is established to improve remedy
user services. Is the main service it improves, one that we used to get for
free? How can it not be provided for free, but can be provided for a fee?
I thought wwrug was to offer new things to remedy users. Then you insult
someone who is trying to provide a alternative to paying for an archive
info. Dont you see Dan, all you have done is taking something great, and to
make 395*2000 ruined something that belonged to all of us as much as it did
you. We need a new arslist founder. Anyone have the hardware to make this
happen?
I hate to say I told so, but I told you so.
7) ARSList is slow? Stop Complaining. It will speed up, and spreading our
efforts over a dozen little sites run purely to
provide an opportunity to get business, with only a fraction of the
community effort that the ARSList has, is not the answer.
Dan, remind me who is running a site purely to provide an opportunity to get
buisness. Only you buddy, only you.
wwrug aint the answer
Melissa
Just bringing everyone up to date on the move:
1) ARSList has as many messages as ever, up to 138 in a single day.
I am too busy to monitor it hour by hour, so in fact I am mostly on
digest as well these days.
2) DIGEST users. If you want to have the messages show up as
attachments then you need to: set arslist MIME DIGEST I'll try to set
this as the default as well.
3) We had a drive failure this week which did slow the system for a few
days
while it was being replaced
4) The load on the system is such that it takes up to 2.5 hours to send
out
all the e-mail, and for some
reason this system is responding differently to the last identical
configuration I ran. I am talking to technical
support to try and resolve some of the performance and "bundling"
issues.
5) I will be increasing the number of outgoing threads this week which
will
speed it up, but I have to balance
that with the load on our pipe, which is higher than it should be
because of the bundling issue.
6) The Web based archives were something that Buffalo had set up that
places
too large a load on any system
to provide for free. It did not exist before Buffalo temporarily
hosted
the list (as a favour). Look at the
numbers: 15,000+ messages in a non-database structure being searched
by
up to N people a day on an internet
based system. I am considering alternatives, but more than likely only
WWRUG will have a searchable archive.
For free I will probably have a FTP area if people want to download
the
monthly archives.
7) ARSList is slow? Stop Complaining. It will speed up, and spreading our
efforts over a dozen little sites run purely to
provide an opportunity to get business, with only a fraction of the
community effort that the ARSList has, is not the answer.
ARSList has been around for six years (well ok, technically 5 years 10
months), let's keep it going!
8) The ARSList, according to LSoft the folks that created listserv, counts
as a very large list due to the frequency of posts. They
were quite astounded by it in fact. We are an unusually talkative list
for the numbers involved.

I'm paying Remedy more than $14,000 / year for maintenance today. This
also includes "Help" from Remedy.
There's NO way I can afford to pay more $$ this WWRUG. Even if I wanted to,
there's NO way my management
would agree to give me the $$ to pay for additional Help from WWRUG

Also, I for one don't mind paying a fee for valuable information. If Dan
Bloom has been spending his valuable time working on the ARSlist, and WWRUG,
then he or someone should be compensated for it. Finally Melissa, I don't
mind you voicing your concerns about the ARSlist, or WWRUG; however, I do
mind you personalizing your frustrations and anger towards an individual,
such as Dan.
My two cents ......

Melissa/Thomas,
Shouldn't you be more upset with Remedy since you pay THEM for support but
don't get what you expect? Instead you are arguing that this information
should be accessible to everyone for free. Well, it is. Everyone can have
access to every e-mail sent to the list FOR FREE!
Archive? Save the e-mails that come in and build your own. Dan mentioned
in # 6 of his e-mail "For free I will probably have a FTP area if people

If you don't want to spend the money on WWRUG, then don't! You get what you
PAY FOR. If you think it's so easy for Buffalo to maintain the list, why
not contact them and see how they feel about continuing the free service.
By the way Melissa and Thomas, thank you for all of the assistance you have

I thoroughly agree. This "entitlement" mentality is amazing in it's
complete lack of recognition of reality. Oh, and are spell-checkers
considered too fascist an application for you to use, Melissa? Thanks for
subjecting the readers to your spelling and grammar, which was about what
would come from my 4th grade son. Really underscored the thoughtful
intelligence of your point.
Finally, maybe my memory is faulty, but I don't recall ever seeing Melissa's
name contributing on the list before. Just how much work has she done to
make the list a better place for anyone?
Sorry to vent further, I really will get back to work now.

Ahh, as if we didnt know this was coming . . .
Dan, remind me who is running a site purely to provide an opportunity to get
buisness. Only you buddy, only you.
wwrug aint the answer

why I subscribe to the ARSlist, and why I subscribe to WWRUG. I paid for
WWRUG sight unseen because I recognize the value of information.

Before anyone says anything further that would prevent you from sharing a
beer with your fellow Remedy folks at the next RUG, let's just take a
moment, breath, and let this go, or at least bring it back to a level where
consideration, professionalism, and common curteousy are more evident.

Rick,
I thoroughly agree.
Sorry to vent further, I really will get back to work now.

insulting people whose opinions differ from your own. I have to wonder what
your motivation is? Ten to one, I bet you are a charter member... You're
quite right, I am a notourious speller, my grammer is questionable, heck you
can outright call me stupid, but I don't think this invaidates what I have
to say. The "WWRUG future" dosen't greatly benifit anyone but those
collecting the fees. In fact I personally believe there are a lot of list
listners who feel the same way but are afraid, rightly so, of the response
from arslist veterans, such as yourself. In your heart Rick, you know its
wrong to take away the archive and then charge for people to get it back.
Theres a better way, there must be.

For your information ... for free ...
Buffalo runs and maintains a couple of hundreds of lists like arslist,
ms-access has about 2 or 3 times the volume of arslist ...

Dan mentioned
in # 6 of his e-mail "For free I will probably have a FTP area if people
want to download the monthly archives."
If you don't want to spend the money on WWRUG, then don't! You get what you
PAY FOR. If you think it's so easy for Buffalo to maintain the list, why
not contact them and see how they feel about continuing the free service.
By the way Melissa and Thomas, thank you for all of the assistance you have
ever provided to people who post questions here.

Dan mentioned
in # 6 of his e-mail "For free I will probably have a FTP area if people
want to download the monthly archives."
Just my 2 cents....delivered for free.

Ahh, as if we didnt know this was coming . . .

I'm obviously not making myself clear to you. Let me try again.
You decry personal attacks while making them. You still don't
understand that other people have done lots of work to make this list what
it is, and THEY aren't the ones complaining, YOU, who have contributed
nothing, are. No, I'm not a "charter member", but I am mature enough to
recognize a good thing when I see it. If the list was pulled tomorrow, I'd
be thankful for the help I had received from it, and move on.
I never flame someone who presents an informed, respectful opinion,
regardless of whether it agrees with mine, because in so doing, I would lose
the opportunity to learn something new. But I have little tolerance for
what sounds like someone who doesn't understand how the world works telling
those of us who do that we're akin to fascist lemmings. I get enough of
that from my kids.
And no, I do not "know in my heart" that it is wrong for someone to
begin charging for something they created and paid for out of their own
pocket. On the contrary, that is capitalism at work. Especially since Dan
and Joel have spent thousands of their own dollars over the past several
years, I don't have any problem with them trying to get a little of it back.
They have already said that they aren't trying to make a profit off this;
just cover expenses.
Finally, you're right, your spelling, grammar, etc. don't invalidate
what you have to say, but the insulting and inflammatory way you wrote your
posts did. Present your concerns and/or questions here any time, but I'd
advise coming from a position of more knowledge - and respect - first. If
you don't know something, ask! That's why we're here.

Since I can always understand what you are saying, regardless of how you spell
it, I for one will stand up for your spelling, even if it's wrong.
I'm not ready to sign on to your semi-Marxist Captalist Critique just yet; but I
won't join in a Capitalist Lynching either. Let's keep in mind what we (all)
want: a good framework for Remedy support, and close ranks in Solidarity

we have had a FREE service for quite a while.
no one has paid a dime for this, why do you
expect some one to continue as if you deserve
this service ?
maitaining a database (as we should all know)
takes quite a bit of time and effort. who among
you would be willing to take this on for free ?
a service is being provided, and we should expect
to pay for it.

So we would pay Buffalo.edu?
wwrug seems like a good idea, but I don't know why the list was moved from
buffalo to here, the only effect seems to have been the loss of the
archives.

I thought this list was to serve as a knowledge base and an assistant
(of a sort) to the Remedy support personnel in CA. They aren't that
bad, to be honest, you just have to talk to the right person. Write
down the support personnel name and keep of a log of the efficient
ones. I do, and I haven't had any problems.

It does. However, no one has ever had ANY obligation whatsoever to
start and maintain ARSList, nor to continue doing so. The ARSList has
been provided free-of-charge to the Remedy community (and as far as I
can tell, it will continue to be). We should be thankful that ARSList
has been there for us, even if it were going away tomorrow (which isn't
even the case). Apparently the parties responsible for ARSList have
decided that it is no longer feasible to maintain this community without
some sort of method to offset expense, hence WWRUG. In a perfect world,
they would not have to resort to this, BUT in a perfect world there
would be no need for Remedy, would there? Or help desks, or having to
work for a living, or having to commute etc. etc. If there is some way
to work toward this perfect world, then I say go for it, but I don't
think that complaining about something you got for free is the way to
accomplish it.
> ...and an assistant

At the price of $37,000+ a year, I would certainly hope that ANY person
I talk to at Remedy would be the right person. Unfortunately this is
not always the case. ARSList is free, and if I receive a feasible
solution or suggestion, then I consider that a blessing (or should,
anyway). If I don't get the answer I need, well, I'm not paying for it
so them's the breaks. As it stands, I think I've had at least as much
success taking a problem to the ARSList as I have by going to Remedy
Support with it. I regret that my company is highly unlikely to pay for
WWRUG but at least the ARSList is still around, and still free. Even if
it were to go away, I would definitely regret it, but seeing how it's
free I can't really justify complaining. That's just bad mojo.
Well, I'm the "nth" person to comment on all this but I couldn't let it
go any longer without saying something.

know the names of the good ones, and the bad one. But how does that help if
every time you call the get the bad one? If you know a way to avoid a
support staff person who is not helpful, could you share that info.

1. get a news group for Remedy going. Free and anyone can use it. Remedy
can't control it nor charge for it unless they host it on their server.
2. Setup another mailing list. Get an old 486, linux and majordomo (or some
other opensource mailing list program) and ask your ISP some shelf space.
Many small to medium ISPs know that a 200 message a day mailing list is
squat in bandwidth and would be willing to provide you with a LAN drop and a
power cord, you bring the hardware. If your company has a good pipe to the
net you could host it yourself.
3. There are plenty of banner ad driven mailing list services that are free.
I use a few and they have WWW searching for archives and the banner Spam is
at the bottom of the messages as a footer. Not a bad solution. Here is one
as a example: http://www.egroups.com/
4. Keep paying Remedy for mediocre support and subscribe to the new for
charge mailing list.
And to those who feel paying is ok, I get over 300 messages a day form the
Redhat Linux mailing list. Redhat provides this for free to ANYONE who
want's to join. Stardivision (makers of Staroffice) offer free Newsgroups
that they host for support. Even Microsoft allows anyone to search their
support articles for problems. Not all support should be fee based.
If the maintainers of this list feel they have to charge a fee for it then
they are not looking hard enough at readily available free alternatives,
they are trying to make money where none should be made.
Just my $0.02

You hit it on the head. There are some good support personnel at Remedy. I
know the names of the good ones, and the bad one. But how does that help if
every time you call the get the bad one? If you know a way to avoid a
support staff person who is not helpful, could you share that info.

following:
- barely understands where the problem is - server, client, database, os,
etc., even if you clearly describe it and expect just a solution.
- asks for all possible logs, sql, api, filter, workflow, system, etc.
- tells he is going to reproduce the problem (poor guy).
If that happen, better forget it and post your problem on the list.
Hopefully someone has fought this problem before.
Take care,

You hit it on the head. There are some good support personnel at Remedy. I
know the names of the good ones, and the bad one. But how does that help if
every time you call the get the bad one? If you know a way to avoid a
support staff person who is not helpful, could you share that info.

We are all in this as volunteers, including Dan Bloom.
If you don't like it -- look for help somewhere else.
(although I doubt if you will find better info at a better price anywhere
else)

time to get to the point. Waw, lots of fire ... and smoke.
Please, forgive me for adding some more oil to the fire, but I feel I have
to say couple of worlds too.
For a years I was appreciating and still appreciate Dan's efforts to
maintain this list. I admit it takes a lot of Dan's time, some hardware and
more expenses for Internet connection, etc.. It seemed Dan always had kind
of "sponsor" - Buffalo, SHL or whatever it has been, but as a meter of fact,
to the best of my knowledge, this list had never been sponsored in the right
sense of this world.
Hey, so why not?
How many of you work for free?
Are you paying the subscription for your magazines.
So let me ask the question? How much of you will pay small fee to support
your business community (hey, not than Dan will get that reach from this,
although he deserves it) ?
Count on me, not that I need that instant help from the list that much, but
because being on the list makes me feel I'm part of something good, friendly
and creative.
Regards,
Nicky
