Greetings ARSDoc fans!

I downloaded Matt Reinfeldt’s latest ARSDoc for windows.
I copied the dll’s (arapi51.dll, arrpc51.dll and arutl51.dll)
from Remedy into the folder.

I have set these variables in the configfile:
$Server = 'bluejay';
$Homedir = 'C:\ARSDoc\bluejaymar';
$Homeurl = 'bluejaymar';

From the command prompt I run “arsdoc configfile”.

I get “ARSDoc.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.”

The “bluejaymar” file does get created, but nothing is in it.

What am doing wrong?

Dwayne,

I've had a couple of reports of issues with the 1.29 compiled version. I will investigate and recompile.

I'll let you know when it's available.

ARS Doc probably doesn't support longer than 8 character file or directory names? Just hitting on a guess here... Try using shorter names for your directory or convert it into the 8 character format on your config file 'bluej~01' - something like that might do the trick?...

James,

I'm using ARSPerl 1.84, which was compiled with the 6.3 libraries. However, if you're asking if I'm going to go continue the code changes to gather more data that is 6.3 specific. only on a "as time permits" basis. Lately, I just haven't had the cycles for side projects as I used to. David has told me (and it's posted on his website) that he does not intend to do more development on arsdoc. It is, however, open source, so, if someone wants to take the initiative and open up a sourceforge project for it, maybe there are folks who'd be willing to help continue its development!

Any takers? :-)

Matt,

I might be in between projects next month and it it is not too time consuming wouldn't mind taking a stab at it. I'm not an expert with PERL but it would be worth giving it a try and see what I could do with it. If I can manage it I could ask my company to host the ready product on our site for free download. All depends on how much time I get in between projects too.

Joe,

I have often thought about going down this road. But what I have found
is that ARSPerl is always the limiting factor. It simply does not
expose all of the Object API details that the current version of ARS
has.

If there is a real interest in making this "ARSDoc" into a
multi-developer, open sourced, application, then I really think having
it written in C (or my preference Java) would make more sense in the
long run. That would obviously require a full rewrite, but the output
formats could be honored.

Is there any interest in going down that road?

(Or maybe even a "Web application" that would do a more "dynamic"
equivalent set of task?)

I have been setting on some work I did in v5.x with the XML ARS def
file formats. To transform the XML def file into HTML for a browser.
(via a simple Servlet using Saxon XSLT transformations) I have not yet
released any of the templates, but it might be a better starting point
for some of the detailed display stuff. [ And it could be extended to
be able to dynamically get updated XML files from the ARS server too.
:]

Anyway... just a few thoughts.

I like the "dynamic" model, which would always be up-to-date.
There might be some use for a static model so you can go back
and see how things were before your last mistake.

Carey:

I tend to stick with the Remedy supported API's. I prefer 'c' over Java due to the overhead of building the program and then having to run a JVM vice just a regular program. Java does have one advantage and that is the 'build once, play anywhere' functionality.

Either way, I would like to see the source, is it available?

ARUtilities will do HTML documentation. It may not be as complete as ARSDoc at
this time, but it is being updated to provide more information. A free
evaluation is available at:
