** I was not sure whether to share my latest GPS experience with this group but after Joe's story I think it is very fitting...

Recently received a GPS as a birthday gift and thought I would try it out in DC. Needed to get to a hotel near the Pentagon. Plugged in the address and started off. I was very impressed and it actually took me a way that I did know. So, for the return trip I decided to once again let it guide me. I punched in my home address, waited for it to calculate and started on my way.

Exit parking lot and go left .. OK np.
At next intersection make a LEGAL u-turn .. OK np.
In 500 ft make next right OK ..np.
In 50 ft make a left. this is where things go dreadfully wrong.

Now, I've been in the area a couple of times and I knew I was heading toward the Pentagon but didn't think anything of it until I made that next left and was going the wrong way on a one-way street into the Pentagon parking lot!!!!. Well, it took me about three seconds to realize the mistake and the Pentagon police about 4 seconds! Not a good place to be. 10 PM on a Friday night in an empty Pentagon parking lot with two police cars lights a flashing. In the end I was given a warning after explaining the GPS was guiding me. The officers decided to guide me to the highway through the parking lot, exactly the way the GPS wanted me to go

This is really true, believe it or not and I think if we had a video of the whole incident it might have made it to America's funny videos!

Our Remedy unit recently about 3 or 4 months ago were in Denver on a business trip. All of us are from Jersey and one of us was from NY so none of us were very familiar with Denver's city routes.. So we had rented a GPS system along with our rental car...

The very first evening when we were hotel bound after work, we programmed the hotel address on this GPS system, and one of the exits we were to take that lead to the hotel was blocked for repairs for 3 months so we drove past it, hoping the GPS would recalculate the route and give us an alternate route.. It did so, took us a round circle and brought us right back to that same exit!

We then tried to drive past it and purposely took a few lefts and rights so the GPS would recalculate and give us another route - no luck! Same exit again! We did try again with the same luck! We even ended up getting lost some place with the GPS not able to locate a route that we should get on!

Until we finally gave up and called the hotel - gave them our position and stayed on the phone till we got to the hotel via a backroad!

And would you guess what was the name of that GPS system?

NeverLost...

Amen!

Yikes! These days, that kind of mistake can make you a target and end
you up on some bloody no-fly list!

There is a lot to be said for good old fashion maps!

Maps aren't for me - I have a uncanny knack of misinterpreting directions especially if what you see on paper doesn't look eactly like what you see on the road! I probably hold some sort of a record for making wrong turns and ending up in another town using maps! Done that number of times it isn't funny anymore!

Warren and Frank:

Even worse, you could end up in the dirt with a gun at your back while the Pentagon Police try to figure out what you were up to. Or you could end up with four flat tires.

In any case, the police had a sense of humor, realized that you were no harm and let you go where you wanted to go.

And I don't trust GPS systems. I get a map. A good map, plastic coated and foldable, costs about the price of one day's useage of a GPS.

Should be more worried about disappearing to Gitmo Bay than on a no-fly list.

Oh shoot, and I thought it was all about not being in agreeance with
the main stream school of political thought (and for those laws that
are now permanent, in agreeance with the school of political thought,
whatever they happen to be at the time).

I feel so free when I know the laws could facilitate and enable my
disappearance.
