Hi listers,
We are happy to announce availability of the alpha release of phparapi.
It is hosted on Sourceforge, http://sourceforge.net/projects/php-arapi
Currently it supports CreateEntry, GetEntry, SetEntry and GetListEntryswithFields for
your basic data fetch-and-set needs.

The library is using the excellent RTL from Dan Hardy. Also... stay tuned for an
updated version of the eleGantt-visualisation script recoded using phparapi.

Best wishes from a snowy Stockholm

Very cool - I will check it out as soon as I get some time. I'm glad
you found RTL to be useful in this development, and hope that it
delivered as promised!

FYI, I will probably "release" the 1.0 stable version of RTL soon. It's
currently beta, but I believe it is stable. I've received some good
feedback (i.e. it is actually being used), and there are a few minor
(and "mostly harmless") warnings produced when compiling under GCC. It
has been successfully tested on both Linux and Solaris now though.
Before releasing it, I intend to eliminate the warnings GCC has
identified, except of course for those that are produced by the AR
System header files themselves.

Regards,
Dan Hardy

The wiki page includes accurate references to this project as well as
Dan's projects. Changed the links to reference the proper home page
for the project.

I look forward to playing with a php-gannt module that does not rely
on the ARODBC driver ;-)

Dan:

As a fellow programmer, I will caution against attempting to remove each and every error generated by gcc (and I'm doing this here because I want other programmers to see it.) I work with OpenOffice.org as a 'hobby' and am assisting the Mac OS X porting team. I routinely built it and there are many gcc warnings, both on 3.3 and 4.0.1 (aka 4.1). These are a fault of gcc, not the header files I use (Boost and STLport are two sources of header files.) Apparently, gcc still has a problem with pointer casting and this is a source of a majority of the warnings. Also, I will caution (again) that if the program is not broken, works as designed (and not the way that BMC designs things) then don't mess with it! You may spend hours and hours trying to work around your fix, only to find that the original code was just fine.

And I will look at RTL, but probably not use it at my present position.

James McKenzie

The errors using gcc/g++ on linux should probably be addressed even
though they are harmless if for no other reason that to keep the code
clean. These are types of errors that were generated using the -Wall
checks (which are really generated from -Wunused and -Wreturn-type):

Were things like:
./include/Server.h:605: warning: unused variable 'fieldList'

./include/FieldLimit.h:102: warning: 'class
rtl::FieldLimit::NullLimitImpl' has virtual functions but non-virtual
destructor

Axton:

I see these errors and they should be cleaned up. Unused variables can cause problems and the non-virtual destructor is usually an oversight on the part of the programmer.

My other statements do stand as I tried to clean up the OpenOffice.org code and ended up making a mess (and wasting about a day doing so.) However, it was very educational.

I found these warnings to be persisitent, and I already passed them on to
Dan.

The first 2 could depend on the warning level and version of the compiler.
I have not found any of them to cause any problem at runtime.

The warnings don't look good since they are encountered often during
compilitation, due to the nature of templates being held in header files.

solaris 2.8 (8) and gcc version 3.2.2.

ListT.h:79: warning: base class `class rtl::AssignableT'

I should be able to get to these today. I did verify that the first is harmless (because the base class rtl::AssignableT's default constructor and copy constructor are identical). I'm not sure exactly what the second warning below implies, but it certainly looks harmless. The third was an oversight.

Dan:

Also it appears that the version of gcc is very old. I will check my Solaris 9 systems here, but I think gcc should at least be 3.3, if not 4.0. Are you testing with all of these?
