I'm trying to download the slides from this year's RUG. Unfortunately, I missed the session they revealed the secret handshake in. What are we supposed to be using for the login and password for the downloads?

Yeah, I got that, too. Only the first one I tried worked. Also, there aren't downloads attached for the really good stuff (7.0 sneak peek and Doug's upgrade session).

I think everyone is watching what is being posted. The url was provided to those that attended (paid) for RUG. With formats changing in general it is wise to make sure things that are made available are not withdrawn in the future. If BMC decides at some point to open it up, which would be great for everyone, that's up to them. What people do privately is one thing, but may not need to be advertised here.

what a killjoy! Rub a little more salt in the wounds ;^> (I kid, I kid)



They usually get released to the "unwashed masses" eventually. I would hope that they don't hold people's intellectual property hostage to keep attendance up. There are enough things that are RUG ONLY that one would not expect to share if one did not attend but Session Presentations are one way to help convince management that you NEED to go next year. "Boss; look what I missed by not attending and asking some deep, incisive questions of this presenter. RUG is a 'must attend' next year. Please, oh pretty please."

Two RUGs(2000 & 2004) under my belt and hoping for more.

There is no doubt about it.

I am certain that they are watching as well. I have the read receipt
feature set on my email, and receive a number of ‘read’ and
‘deleted-without-being-read’ messages every now and again that come out of
the bmc.com domain. Maybe it is one of their folks just using the list
like everyone else; maybe not. Who knows? All I can tell is that the
messages are being recieved there.

I will say that - since this is a public forum and one that is not
controlled by a particular company or person (sans Mr. B.) - I believe
that agreement on the content of my posts is optional. I don't spend any
nights awake wondering about it. I am entitled to my opinion and refuse to
feel intimidated for it.

Having said that, I will say that - in my opinion - the practice of
withholding presentations which could help the rest of the community
stinks. It used to be that you could go out to the site openly and
download them without any trouble. Now they are gone.

So now I have to attend the national RUG, and pay xyz amount of dollars to
be able to get a secret URL to download a presentation for a session that
I may have sat in on. Is it just me, or does this seem just a bit over the
top? Now you could make the arguement that this is "IP" content and that
it represents x dollars, but c'mon.. This stuff was meant to be presented
to an audience - and a large one at that. You can't tell me that the
knowledge isn't going to make it's way around - it always does.

What happened here? What happened to development being something that was
"cool" to do, and when (large portions of) knowledge was shared?

Ahhh well.. Maybe I should start looking into flying a plane (carrying
30,00lbs of bananas) for a living or something... I am beginning to feel a
bit old school here.

I thought of that as I was pressing 'send'.
There are always ways to spin it. "This is just the presentation.
Imagine what I can learn by being there."
It all comes done to the manager in the end anyway. If they feel you can
benefit from attending you can go. Usually it's used as a very big 'Atta
boy!. Some managers just never see the light so you get stuck on the
sidelines begging for scraps.
I attended last year and had access to the presentations so I don't
specifically remember if they were released to the non-attending
community. I've managed to get them in years past, though.

I hope BMC-Remedy makes them public. It seems so cold to shun the
"poorer relatives" who couldn't come to the dance.

How about:

1.) The chance to speak directly with the staff, developers, etc. that
develop and maintain the product. If you need to ask a question, who
better to ask?

2.) The chance to attend the development road map discussion and learn
when or rather when (somewhere about here on the chart - :-) ) product
features will be supported.

3.) View demonstrations of the AR System Suite of applications (meaning
the ITSM suite, CS and others) to determine whether or not they are a
better fit for your particular business process.

4.) View demonstrations of partner applications ( toys, kids... we love
'em don't we?? ) that might make the daily care and feeding of our
installations a little easier.

5.) Network and discuss the "how did you do it" questions and answers.

Now this is funny to me, because I have never actually been to a national
RUG and I can come up with these VERY valid reasons for attending. RUG is
an important part of the experience and should not be excluded if you can
make the trip.

Getting a piece of knowledge to make your job easier from a single
PowerPoint presentation ( or something of the like ) is hardly a
substitute, nor is it a valid replacement for being there. Why? Because
the person reading the presention only gets half the story.

That's why I don't understand why the presentations have been made
unavailable. IMHO - they should be available to any and all.

I have to agree with you. Some of the fun of being a Remedy developer has faded. It has become more business like since I have been involved in it.

When I got into Remedy you could get the server application without a contract ID. Granted you couldn't add much to it (like today) but you could get it and play with it. Which was one of the benefits. I believe it was one of the things that made it grow so quickly and so well.

You didn't have to spend large chunks of money to have a system for you to tinker on. And with the limitation of 3 licenses and a couple thousand records, what would you use it for besides minor development and theory testing.

I find that they are growing into a normal company, and while this is disturbing from the lack or a warm and fuzzy, it is probably a good thing, from the aspect that they will probably be around longer.

Also (allow me to be self-centered) the harder it is to get a hold of, the more the companies will have to pay for a good "resource". If we could just get all individuals in Remedy to realize what a good rate they could receive then we might stop getting offers for a project that pays 25/hr.

Again, these are just my opinions. Take them for what you want. Or don't take them, it is all good. ;-)

be able to get a secret URL to download a presentation for a session that
I may have sat in on. Is it just me, or does this seem just a bit over the
top? Now you could make the arguement that this is "IP" content and that
it represents x dollars, but c'mon.. This stuff was meant to be presented
to an audience - and a large one at that. You can't tell me that the
knowledge isn't going to make it's way around - it always does.

What happened here? What happened to development being something that was
"cool" to do, and when (large portions of) knowledge was shared?

Ahhh well.. Maybe I should start looking into flying a plane (carrying
30,00lbs of bananas) for a living or something... I am beginning to feel a
bit old school here.

You have very valid reasons, Will. My own would include the ability to meet Remedy support and engineering staff (which can help in a crunch situation), and to gather information that would help my boss to be more proactive in pointing out business needs and trends that would help the company to lean more on his IT department. Knowing where the product line is going will help you to not waste time developing things that Remedy is already bringing along in the next version.

As a consultant, I have used such knowledge to extend engagements - worth the price right there.

Another argument is that slides do not give you the entirety of a presentation.

A GOOD presentation should, in theory, have slides that are the basis for talking points. A slide might say "6 notes on ARS efficiency in workflow" with bullets yet the presenter could talk for 20 minutes about that slide alone. Reading just the slides will never get you the content that attending any of the many sessions would get you.

In fact, some of the worst presentations I've ever seen are when people only read what is on the slides.

Last year and the year before (if recalling right), it took some days for the presentations to be available for general public. Suppose will be the same this time.

It's always a great thing being able to read them (and they are all archived here on disks). Especially for me from Germany, as I will never ever be able to go to a RUG as no one pays for it (yeah poor me, pitty me please, now, hehe :-)

So... anyway. Just let's wait and see.

The presentations appear to no longer be available for download. I've gone to the URL specified on the "ACTIVATE KNOWLEDGE" paper and I can see all of the sessions, but there's no longer any link to the slides (in fact the entire 'Presentation' column is missing).

Anyone know why that is?

There is a URL along with a login and password that was given in the RUG kits. I have contacted Mr. Dooling to see if everyone could be emailed with the proper information in case it was lost. I don't think that they are providing it for those who did not attend. I will see if that can be changed and made public information.

There is a URL along with a login and password that was given in the RUG kits. I have contacted Mr. Dooling to see if everyone could be emailed with the proper information in case it was lost. With formats changing in general it is wise to make sure things that are made available are not withdrawn in the future. This was an odd problem, I was informed when I downloaded them, that clicking on the link wouldn't download them. Instead it was required to right click and "Save Target As" . However when I clicked the links last week, they worked for me. Is it possibly a firewall issue for some? Either way, try doing the "Save Target As" maybe that will work for you.

At the very worst if it continues I would be happy to snail mail them on CD, or if there is enough demand set up an FTP site.
Let me know how it pans out.

That's very nice of you Thomas, but quite frankly BMC needs to set up something that works. I've done the Save Target As and get a '20' error about an issue with the document. It's pretty common for people especially at companies to have firewalls, they need to be able to work with that. I download other things from their website with no problem.

If we need an ftp site, BMC should provide it. Personally I would prefer the method used in previous years, yes another old way, where the presentations came on a CD at the conference. You get home, you're excited, you want to show the presentation to someone. It looses some of it's glitter when you have to make photocopies of the small slides to use. Besides, it can be timeconsuming to do alot of downloads, the CD was nice and could be referenced as needed.

But again, I may just be pick-nitting .... let's see how much was that registration fee ????

BMC, is there someplace we can order a CD? .... NO CHARGE PLEASE !

I have to agree with you on this. BMC should provide either soft or hard copy documentation of the presentations given at the RUG. I used them from the 2001/2002 presentations to review/self-teach what was done at those RUGs (courtsey of someone at my employer/contractee that could attend them.)

Also, after a specified period of time, say a quarter, they could also be made available to the public. This way, those of us (like Claire) could get them. They might even be used as a sale technique by ARS Administrators/Engineers to get funding for next year's RUG. I know that I just talked about the Remedy Education Boot Camp, and I got funding to attend three days of seminars at the Pleastanton Training Facility. And it worked out great (except I cannot get WSDL to work over HTTPS, but that's another story.) In my humble opinion, releasing the RUG presentations to the public would be a great sales item.

And finally, BMC needs to get the problems with their servers repaired. As to the problems involving firewalls, they are too numerous for BMC alone to deal with. However, if you can get patches, you should be able to get the presentations.

That's very nice of you Thomas, but quite frankly BMC needs to set up something that works. I've done the Save Target As and get a '20' error about an issue with the document. It's pretty common for people especially at companies to have firewalls, they need to be able to work with that. I download other things from their website with no problem.

If we need an ftp site, BMC should provide it. Personally I would prefer the method used in previous years, yes another old way, where the presentations came on a CD at the conference. You get home, you're excited, you want to show the presentation to someone. It looses some of it's glitter when you have to make photocopies of the small slides to use. Besides, it can be timeconsuming to do alot of downloads, the CD was nice and could be referenced as needed.

But again, I may just be pick-nitting .... let's see how much was that registration fee ????

BMC, is there someplace we can order a CD? .... NO CHARGE PLEASE !

There is a URL along with a login and password that was given in the RUG kits. I have contacted Mr. Dooling to see if everyone could be emailed with the proper information in case it was lost. Last year and the year before (if recalling right), it took some days for the presentations to be available for general public. Suppose will be the same this time.

It's always a great thing being able to read them (and they are all archived here on disks). Especially for me from Germany, as I will never ever be able to go to a RUG as no one pays for it (yeah poor me, pitty me please, now, hehe :-)

So... anyway. Just let's wait and see.

I think everyone is watching what is being posted. The url was provided to those that attended (paid) for RUG. With formats changing in general it is wise to make sure things that are made available are not withdrawn in the future. The presentations appear to no longer be available for download. I've gone to the URL specified on the "ACTIVATE KNOWLEDGE" paper and I can see all of the sessions, but there's no longer any link to the slides (in fact the entire 'Presentation' column is missing).

Last year and the year before (if recalling right), it took some days for the presentations to be available for general public. Suppose will be the same this time.

It's always a great thing being able to read them (and they are all archived here on disks). Especially for me from Germany, as I will never ever be able to go to a RUG as no one pays for it (yeah poor me, pitty me please, now, hehe :-)

So... anyway. Just let's wait and see.

I think everyone is watching what is being posted. The url was provided to those that attended (paid) for RUG. With formats changing in general it is wise to make sure things that are made available are not withdrawn in the future. If BMC decides at some point to open it up, which would be great for everyone, that's up to them. What people do privately is one thing, but may not need to be advertised here.

I have to agree with you on this. BMC should provide either soft or hard copy documentation of the presentations given at the RUG. I used them from the 2001/2002 presentations to review/self-teach what was done at those RUGs (courtsey of someone at my employer/contractee that could attend them.)

Also, after a specified period of time, say a quarter, they could also be made available to the public. This way, those of us (like Claire) could get them. They might even be used as a sale technique by ARS Administrators/Engineers to get funding for next year's RUG. I know that I just talked about the Remedy Education Boot Camp, and I got funding to attend three days of seminars at the Pleastanton Training Facility. And it worked out great (except I cannot get WSDL to work over HTTPS, but that's another story.) In my humble opinion, releasing the RUG presentations to the public would be a great sales item.

And finally, BMC needs to get the problems with their servers repaired. As to the problems involving firewalls, they are too numerous for BMC alone to deal with. However, if you can get patches, you should be able to get the presentations.

That's very nice of you Thomas, but quite frankly BMC needs to set up something that works. I've done the Save Target As and get a '20' error about an issue with the document. It's pretty common for people especially at companies to have firewalls, they need to be able to work with that. I download other things from their website with no problem.

If we need an ftp site, BMC should provide it. Personally I would prefer the method used in previous years, yes another old way, where the presentations came on a CD at the conference. You get home, you're excited, you want to show the presentation to someone. It looses some of it's glitter when you have to make photocopies of the small slides to use. Besides, it can be timeconsuming to do alot of downloads, the CD was nice and could be referenced as needed.

But again, I may just be pick-nitting .... let's see how much was that registration fee ????

BMC, is there someplace we can order a CD? .... NO CHARGE PLEASE !

There is a URL along with a login and password that was given in the RUG kits. I have contacted Mr. Dooling to see if everyone could be emailed with the proper information in case it was lost. I don't think that they are providing it for those who did not attend. I will see if that can be changed and made public information.

Susan,

I had absolutely no problem downloading from their website and I didn't even have to "Save Target As". I did however call and the person overseeing this is swamped because other managers are on vacation. I placed a call to a Senior VP, I let him know of the complaints and he, lo and behold called me back as I was writing this reply. While someone on the planning committee thought the ftp site was a good cost saving idea not to do the CDs. Live and learn next year you can should get your CD. Its a learning process for them too, so only the perfect can throw stones. As for the access problems I will let BMCRemedy make their own statement, relax its not a vast Texan conspiracy. One other note** I was able to download them without any problems. Yes we do have Firewalls and very tight security. Did you attend Rug? Do you have a current support ID? Shall I just email you the darn things? Have patience they're sorta newbies.

You get home, you're excited, you want to show the presentation to someone. It looses some of it's glitter when you have to make photocopies of the small slides to use. Besides, it can be timeconsuming to do alot of downloads, the CD was nice and could be referenced as needed.

But again, I may just be pick-nitting .... let's see how much was that registration fee ????

BMC, is there someplace we can order a CD? .... NO CHARGE PLEASE !

There is a URL along with a login and password that was given in the RUG kits. I have contacted Mr. Dooling to see if everyone could be emailed with the proper information in case it was lost. Last year and the year before (if recalling right), it took some days for the presentations to be available for general public. Suppose will be the same this time.

It's always a great thing being able to read them (and they are all archived here on disks). Especially for me from Germany, as I will never ever be able to go to a RUG as no one pays for it (yeah poor me, pitty me please, now, hehe :-)

With formats changing in general it is wise to make sure things that are made available are not withdrawn in the future. I have to agree with you on this. BMC should provide either soft or hard copy documentation of the presentations given at the RUG. I used them from the 2001/2002 presentations to review/self-teach what was done at those RUGs (courtsey of someone at my employer/contractee that could attend them.)

Also, after a specified period of time, say a quarter, they could also be made available to the public. This way, those of us (like Claire) could get them. They might even be used as a sale technique by ARS Administrators/Engineers to get funding for next year's RUG. I know that I just talked about the Remedy Education Boot Camp, and I got funding to attend three days of seminars at the Pleastanton Training Facility. And it worked out great (except I cannot get WSDL to work over HTTPS, but that's another story.) In my humble opinion, releasing the RUG presentations to the public would be a great sales item.

And finally, BMC needs to get the problems with their servers repaired. As to the problems involving firewalls, they are too numerous for BMC alone to deal with. However, if you can get patches, you should be able to get the presentations.

That's very nice of you Thomas, but quite frankly BMC needs to set up something that works. I've done the Save Target As and get a '20' error about an issue with the document. It's pretty common for people especially at companies to have firewalls, they need to be able to work with that. I download other things from their website with no problem.

If we need an ftp site, BMC should provide it. Personally I would prefer the method used in previous years, yes another old way, where the presentations came on a CD at the conference. Yes I was at RUG, my 9th, and have a current support ID. The issue turned out to be the version of Adobe Acrobat ... must be 7.0. I hadn't updated mine from 6.0.

One 'last' comment. It shouldn't be a learning process for them, user groups are not a new concept, although Remedy did set a standard that was pretty high. It would have been nice to specify the system requirements on the website/handout and this issue could have been averted since I was not the only one having an issue. Texan conspiracy ... what's that about? I didn't see the need to escalate the issue past the level where it belonged, the RUG Content team answered quickly and thoroughly. The point was not 'getting' the presentations, others have kindly offered, but more the 'process' issue ... isn't that what Service Process Management is all about !

Yes I was at RUG, my 9th, and have a current support ID. The issue turned out to be the version of Adobe Acrobat ... must be 7.0. I hadn't updated mine from 6.0.

One 'last' comment. It shouldn't be a learning process for them, user groups are not a new concept, although Remedy did set a standard that was pretty high. It would have been nice to specify the system requirements on the website/handout and this issue could have been averted since I was not the only one having an issue. Texan conspiracy ... what's that about? I didn't see the need to escalate the issue past the level where it belonged, the RUG Content team answered quickly and thoroughly. The point was not 'getting' the presentations, others have kindly offered, but more the 'process' issue ... isn't that what Service Process Management is all about !

That's very nice of you Thomas, but quite frankly BMC needs to set up something that works. I've done the Save Target As and get a '20' error about an issue with the document. It's pretty common for people especially at companies to have firewalls, they need to be able to work with that. I download other things from their website with no problem.

If we need an ftp site, BMC should provide it. Personally I would prefer the method used in previous years, yes another old way, where the presentations came on a CD at the conference. You get home, you're excited, you want to show the presentation to someone. It looses some of it's glitter when you have to make photocopies of the small slides to use. Besides, it can be timeconsuming to do alot of downloads, the CD was nice and could be referenced as needed.

But again, I may just be pick-nitting .... let's see how much was that registration fee ????

BMC, is there someplace we can order a CD? .... NO CHARGE PLEASE !

There is a URL along with a login and password that was given in the RUG kits. I have contacted Mr. Dooling to see if everyone could be emailed with the proper information in case it was lost. I don't think that they are providing it for those who did not attend. I will see if that can be changed and made public information.

The presentations appear to no longer be available for download. I've gone to the URL specified on the "ACTIVATE KNOWLEDGE" paper and I can see all of the sessions, but there's no longer any link to the slides (in fact the entire 'Presentation' column is missing).

Last year and the year before (if recalling right), it took some days for the presentations to be available for general public. Suppose will be the same this time.

It's always a great thing being able to read them (and they are all archived here on disks). Especially for me from Germany, as I will never ever be able to go to a RUG as no one pays for it (yeah poor me, pitty me please, now, hehe :-)

So... anyway. Just let's wait and see.

I think everyone is watching what is being posted. The url was provided to those that attended (paid) for RUG. With formats changing in general it is wise to make sure things that are made available are not withdrawn in the future. If BMC decides at some point to open it up, which would be great for everyone, that's up to them. What people do privately is one thing, but may not need to be advertised here.
