Hey Folks,

I am installing Helpdesk 6.0 and am running into some major issues. I am working with Remedy also, but they are perplexed to.

Basically, MS Advanced Server 2000 SP4, MS SQL 2000, ARsystem 6.3 (upgraded without errors from 6.0)

My HPD install completes in less than 30 minutes. Only a couple hundred forms are imported. Missing a ton of stuff, especially the People form.

I have sent the logs off to Remedy to peruse and was wondering if anybody might have any ideas as to what is transpiring.

This is in production, but their original ticket app is a small custom job, so deleting the server and starting over isn't an option.

Thank You,

Make sure that your ARSystem transaction log file is not filling up and blocking the creation of additional forms. If you limited its size or prevented it from automatically growing (or run out of disk space on the log drive), this can happen. Check your SQL Server logs for error messages.

On my 6.3 servers I have added SQL Server Agent jobs to backup the transaction log every 30 minutes during the installation of Help Desk 6.0 and SLA 6.0, as well as one to run the same backup on a SQL Server Event Alert with error 9002 - the log file for database ARSystem is full. I run the same jobs in production but hourly, since my transaction count goes through the roof whenever the LDAP server decides that it would be fun to update as many as 300,000 records.

Also, if any portion of the Help Desk 6.0 installation fails, the next try will be faulty. I bombed on my first install because there was an authentication error for the ARSystem database (I use Windows only authentication on SQL Server for higher security). My second install ran but the script decided that it had already installed the CMDB so it skipped it - and missed installing it completely. I had to run the CMDB installer independently, and am still trying to figure out if I got a good initial load of Help Desk 4.0 and SLA 4.0.

I am fighting a completely different error in a Demo server (Win2K3 SQL 2K) where the 6.3 Approval server refuses to install at all and issues an error as follows:

Unhandled Exception
Error Number: 0x80040702
Description: Failed to Load DLL: RIK
Setup will now terminate.

I am starting to wonder if it is because I installed ARS 6.3 Patch 5 directly (never installed 6.3 initial distribution) and there might be some problem with Approval 6.3 "no patch" installing against it. Help Desk 6.0 and Flashboards 6.3 installed with no problem - cannot load SLA 6.0 until AFTER Approval 6.3 so I am stuck too.

That makes sense. I had the dba enlarge the arsystem db to begin with and he turned off external logging. He is checking for errors in his logs.

Anything that is returned to the arerror.log file? What about the install logs - do you see anything that might be of use to analyze whats going on? You will find the install logs in the temp folder...

The error thats being thrown seems to complain about a memory location - it might help to restart the server and then trying to install..

When I was setting up the new system at Illinois State Police, on the out of the box, first try, all the 6.x modules went in fine, (ARS, Approval, MidTier, Help Desk ITSM6, etc). However, I had made a brain cramp error when I was nearly finished importing the def of an old HD4.x form from the old system that was to be used for our archived files. I accidentally in the rush of going to lunch, imported it right in as HPD:Help Desk. (Yes a real dumb mistake). As our system had yet to have any backups done, I was in deep do-do. Now keeping in mind, this is a full windows based system (Windows Server2003, SQL2000 Enterprise), I of course tried a few things, sure it shouldn't be a problem, starting with just reading everything right over. Anyone that's done this knows, all will go EXCEPT Help Desk. And if you try Windows' add/remove, Help Desk is not listed TO add or remove. To keep this on the shorter side, here was the solution that DID work best, because in fact, I deliberately duplicated the mistake, and tried some variants, each time, the solution was the key.

With a failed Help Desk install, what proved foolproof as a fix for me was to do this: launch the Admin tool, and remove all of the HPD prefixed forms. That's it.

With that done, the installer thinks, hmm, there's no Help Desk module in its check routine, and says all is fine to install, and it does. This may not be the official recommended procedure, but after many frustrating calls and tickets with Remedy, (all very kind and polite of course) in my frustration, and a couple wasted days, plus a lot of embarrassment at my stupidity, I found this to be a virtually foolproof solution. (And for those that wondered, of course this wasn't the live system, that is still running on the old 4.x box, this 6.x system will be going live in a few weeks when I return).

Hope this helps.

Jim,

The way I read this you over wrote your version 6 help desk form with the version 4. If that is the case why didn't you re-import the version 6 help desk form over the version 4? There is a set of def files for all forms in the install directory under:-

C:\Program Files\AR System Applications\SERVER NAME\Remedy Help Desk\en\workflow.

Hello,

I just got the same message that Christopher got while installing 6.3
Approval Server on Windows XP after the other modules installed with errors.

After the "Demo" user is entered...(both with and without a password)

issues the following message:
Unhandled Exception
Error Number: 0x80040702
Description: Failed to Load DLL: RIK
Setup will now terminate.

Any hints, walk-throughs, rain-dances that you think may help, please
advise.
