Not only that, but the first really successful jetliner, the Boeing 707, had four engines. Way back in the dark ages, I used to work on its military counterpart, the KC-135. Believe me, under a full load, you needed every bit of thrust from each of those clunky old turbojets just to get off the ground. In fact, you had to sort of cheat and spray demineralized water into the combustion chamber to get enough power out of them.
And MAN were they loud!
