Oh dear, who would have thought I'd be the one getting lecture on the benefits of change !
You will enjoy RUG thoroughly as will I. It's an event unlike any other user function for any other product I've ever attended. You will never get the access to engineers that you will have that week, at sessions, evening with engineers and just milling around. And although there are new faces each year it's nice to see that they have a pretty good retention rate which provides some continuity. Evening with engineering is an event I could never understand how people could skip it. All that wealth of knowledge, not only the engineers but the developers too, in one room is very heady. You're active from 8am until at least 10pm (of course Rick would indicate later ) totally emersed in one of our favorite subjects. It's the total event and will be exhausting, overwhelming, wonderful, educational, inspirational, and it leaves you anxiously awaiting next year's event.
Can't get something much more successful than that.
See you at my 10th RUG ...
Susan

Anyone else getting impatient for the online registration to open up? The site (http://www.remedy.com/rug2005/registration/index.htm) says it was supposed to have opened up in early April... I just want to find out for sure what the tutorial options are going to be so I can submit my request for approval to attend the conference. It doesn't look like that info will be made available until registration opens.

It looks to me that they are trying to add other product tutorials in and taking out some of the more techinical information.
Of course I have never been to a RUG so I could be wrong.

It's no longer a 'Remedy' exclusive RUG. Last year they added some Magic stuff and this year they are taking that further with BMC items.
The tutorials barely look more than presentations we've had at local RUGs, it would be interesting to know how much deeper they are going to go into it.
I suspect next year it won't be called RUG anymore but they didn't want to implement too many changes at one time. Somehow BUG just doesn't have the same ring, or BrUG doesn't work either.
Used to be that everyone you saw there was Remedy and you knew you had something in common with everyone and could start a conversation easily. Now they could be anything. Hi, how are you using Remedy .... oh we have Magic .... gee, I'm sorry ... oh well ...
I hope there won't be a degradation of sessions. I notice they extended the 'Call for Presentations' from the 15th to the 22nd.
Thinking about all this makes a grey cloud hover .....

Since 1995 this has been the highlight of the year from a work perspective ... from the day you left the last one you anxiously awaited the next .... room reservations made the same day the announcement is made, even before the discount is announced .... plane reservations etc ... the anticipation ... the total emersion in all that's Remedy. Ok ... I did boycott the snergy maketing ploy .... but the first one back after that seemed good ... felt good ... and then it started changing. Yes, I know change is good, heavens know I plunk down enough change on people ... but sometimes you just want to hang on to a good thing. Oh yea, change is supposed to make it better. Maybe in the era before the good internet surfing you had to go to conferences to find out about other products. But we don't go to RUG to find out about new products per se, leave the sales dribble at the office, we want the bolts and nuts, the guts, the technical in and out, not the glossy sales job !
Maybe we need a special something we wear to identify ourselves ... a Remedy logo ... the original one ... and I'm not suggesting on our foreheads ... lol ... that's a positive outlook !

** My my people. I am sensing people don't like evolution. Dare I say (boy am I gonna get hit for this) why be in IT if you don't enjoy the changes and evolution of all things technical. And, don't get me wrong, the sales pitch isn't fun, however, every time you learn something new, it helps. And BMC has to do something to help cover the expenses of this endeavor. If they didn't make money, they wouldn't keep doing it. JMHO.

How about we all shave our heads and put it on top?
-----Original Message----- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arslist@ARSLIST.ORG] On Behalf Of Susan Palmer Sent: Thursday, April 21, 2005 3:43 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: RUG @))% or RUG 2005
Susan

Change is not always good, no matter how much we throw that party line out. Adjustment to that change doesn't mean it was a good thing, it just occurs. It's not that I don't like evolution, and there's not a day that goes by that I don't learn something, courtesy of technical responses on the arslist. You just prefer change to be forward moving and beneficial, well thought out with openings for expansion.
Ummmm ... I think you're suggesting we should be happy about paying for a sales pitch .... that's kind of like a telemarketer calling during Alias ... !
I may have sounded a bit cynical about the RUG changes but there's nothing wrong with wanting things that have worked well with numerous benefits that give you energy and desire to go back and make more changes !
Change just for the sake of change is not necessarily good change.

Shaven heads? White robes? Chanting? A priestly order? Whaaaaaaa???
Where is the originality? These have all been done before...

** Susan, No change isn't good just for the sake of itself. However, change must be embraced for it is in-evitable. No it isn't always good. But if you use your imagination you might find a way to turn even bad changes into useful changes. And to be honest, maybe my response was a bit of a knee-jerk, because I have had many users over the years (and expect to have many more) that refuse change because they don't see the advantage, and usually don't even want to look at the posibilities. Now personally speaking, if the presentations are sales pitches I am ok with that. They gave me a small synopsis of what is to be expected from every presentation, and I personally will go to two. But the joy of the presentations is that they aren't included in the cost of the conference. So if you aren't interested, you didn't pay for them or loose any money. The changes that are being instituted aren't manadatory and that is important. Now don't get me wrong, next year my position might change completely. But for now, I say let them try other things. And if enough of my brothers and sisters complain, I expect that they will go back. Also as Dave pointed out before, this is my first RUG. So I don't really have much room to complain. Also, I am just excited about going and meeting some of the people that I have had the pleasure of dealing with for so long, that I can let something like a few bad presentations slide. Also, I will also admit that last year, when I was looking at the list, I would have had full days before the conference and this year I am only going to go to two of them. But then, maybe I will bring my golf clubs. Brian

Susan On 4/21/05, Brian Goralczyk wrote: > ** > My my people. I am sensing people don't like evolution. ** Let me just mention that Dave has beat us all the the punch, and he wants us all to look like him now. However, if we did, we could always let our hair grown out over it. But as I have told Dave before, it isn't gonna happen. I will have a bald head when my face has sufficiently repelled my hair.
