Hi Patrick,
In a year that has "Christmas" as the 8th word you can't say on television, in a country where religion is excluded for the sake of inclusion, this brought the biggest smile to my face. Thanks I needed that. A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to ALL

Indeed. Everywhere we go, it seems that there's "Winter Holiday" this and "Seasonal Occurrence" that - but what holidays are celebrated this time of year? Hannukah? Sure - if I know someone's Jewish, I'll be glad to wish them a happy one. Kwanzaa? Well, I don't even know exactly how that's celebrated, but if that lights someone's candle, I wish them the best one possible. For the other 95% of us in this nation, that holiday is Christmas.
Whether one is religious or not, 97% of the people in this country celebrate Christmas in some way - why can't we wish someone a Merry one? Why should we care if someone is so hyper-sensitive as to be offended by our doing so? The ACLU can kiss my big, white, hairy...mitten, if they think they can keep me from saying
Merry Christmas to All!

For me the saddest thing was how Macy's had sent out a memo this year regarding the removal of the word Christmas from the store. Emlpoyees were told not to discuss it and to refer any questions to HR. OMG this is Macys! The store made its very reputation on Christmas, and the new owners Federated Dept Stores has rewritten history. I guess there is no more Miracle on 34th Street at Macy's. I was really looking forward to one day taking my kid to see Santa at Macys, forget that! What do they think "Santa" means in English? Guess I'll have to take the kids to see the stuffed one on display in the museum of natural history. Its only fitting that Wal-Mart will run them into the ground, because the new Macys is something we can do without. Besides I sort of like the Happy Merry Christmachuanakwanzaka campaign at Targets... at least they are trying to cover the bases, tho I think they missed Tet. While Santa is not the reason for Christmas, its just another symptom of a greater illness. (Stepping off the soap box) Merry Christmas , Happy Chuanakha, Happy Kwanza, and a Happy New Year.

Agreed A manager at our Christmas party actually called for attention and said a prayer; very unexpected and very refreshing!

I know this feeling and I know it well. It is indeed very, very sad. Interesting series of events, isn't it? Sort of makes person wonder what happen....
When I was a little whipper-snapper, I remember that my parents would take me to see Santa as well. During those trips to the store, you could not help but see something that really made it feel like it was Christmas. Even the music was playing. You could not throw a rock without hitting something that had Merry Christmas written on it - in big bold letters even.
Now when I take my kids to see Santa, if you can find one as they are somewhat rare these days, all I see are signs that say "Happy Holidays." The music is optional. It almost seems like Christmas is a concept that is undergoing some sort of metamorphosis right in front of me. What a rip.
Merry Christmas to all.

Celebrating the Solstice is a religious rite, and actually a part of where some Christmas traditions come from. For the true Athiest there is the tradition of sleeping in and if they go out to dinner, the Feast of Immediate Seating which comes from so many having a holiday meal at home. So Blessings upon you all from the Deity of your choice.

I don't mean to start a debate, and my specialty is in "PC" computers, not "PC" politics, and I most certainly don't take offense at people wishing me a Merry Christmas (I work phone support and this time of year its the last thing everyone says), however, I must say that some things are just overboard- I just got my mother a Satellite Radio. It has 1 channel for easy listening (I'm a bit shocked at this, but none-the-less). The provider has removed this one channel (along with 4 others) and is now playing nothing but Christmas music- there are at least 20 sports channels they could have replaced for this month- or better still, created a new channel for it, perhaps had one or two channels reserved for "seasonal"- marching bands for the 4th, love songs for Feb 14th, etc.
A lot of things seem to be like that it seems- don't get me wrong- I agree that its a huge shame everything is being taken so far (e.g. Christmas is a "bad" word), but I also don't see anything wrong with a "Happy Holidays!" either, especially when "Christmas" starts earlier and earlier every year- I went into one store in September and they already had their "Santa" stuff out.
And since I know I'm going to take heat for this one, Let the blasting begin ;~)

In a year that has "Christmas" as the 8th word you can't say on television, in a country where religion is excluded for the sake of inclusion, this brought the biggest smile to my face. Thanks I needed that. A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to ALL

Actually, I believe the holiday for the non-religious is now called "Human Light Day" and is celebrated on Dec. 23rd.

** For me the saddest thing was how Macy's had sent out a memo this year regarding the removal of the word Christmas from the store.

** Indeed. The ACLU can kiss my big, white, hairy...mitten, if they think they can keep me from saying Merry Christmas to All! Rick

Shawn,
Bad radio programming is bad radio programming. Like the way Sirus keeps moving around my favorites, I can't tell which channel month to month. You would think that there would be a channel reserved for Holiday music, religous or secular, at the very least... maybe give up a sport channel, cause yes they have more sports than anyone has a right to follow. After all, if someone needs to listen to all 20 sports channels, then your friends and family need to do an intervention and get you into a 12-Step program, or at the very least get them a date. Its rediculous to take things to extremes in the name of inclusion. Last I checked the 2nd Ammendment stated that the government can not establish or promote a state religion. and that was because in those fine days, if the King was Protestant, you had to be too. Thats a good and fine law, thats why the pilgrims came here in the first place. But it doesn't cover my not feeling a part of things at Christmas time cause I am not religious. Sorry but if a holiday (and not just Christmas) promotes Peace on Earth, and Good Will towards your fellow man, and it makes you uncomfortable... deal with it. Cause no amount of legislation can cure immaturity and intolerence
PS, this is not directed at you Shawn, just a general commentary.

** I don't mean to start a debate, and my specialty is in "PC" computers, not "PC" politics, and I most certainly don't take offense at people wishing me a Merry Christmas (I work phone support and this time of year its the last thing everyone says), however, I must say that some things are just overboard- I just got my mother a Satellite Radio.

I won't be blasting you, but agreeing with you on how we're inundated with Christmas music that starts playing even before Thanksgiving! I celebrate Christmas and I really do enjoy Christmas music, but I find myself hating it by the time Christmas Day rolls around. I can understand playing Christmas music all day long on Christmas eve and Day, but before that... come on, it's a bit much! My solution, I change the radio station when a Christmas song comes on, except on Christmas Day. Unfortunately, I can't do much about the in-store music, but that doesn't bother me much. I celebrate Christmas by the old Calendar ( which is Jan 7th in the current Calendar) thus I do all my shopping during the "after Christmas Sales" which by then the stores no longer pipe in Christmas music. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to All!

Blast those radio manufacturers, they should install a button or knob that allows you to select a station that you prefer to listen to.

Actually the 2nd Amendment is:
"A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed."
The First Amendment is probably the one you meant:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
-----Original Message----- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) on behalf of Thomas Altamore Sent: Tue 12/21/2004 1:24 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: OT: Merry Christmas everyone.. ** Shawn, Bad radio programming is bad radio programming. Cause no amount of legislation can cure immaturity and intolerence PS, this is not directed at you Shawn, just a general commentary.

This link provides an answer to the question:
"Why do Russians celebrate Christmas on January 7th?"
In short if you can't open the link is... Well, the reason is that the Russian Orthodox Church still lives according to the old Julian Calendar, which is currently 13 days behind the Gregorian Calendar,

** Shawn,
Bad radio programming is bad radio programming.

** Indeed.

In a year that has "Christmas" as the 8th word you can't say on television, in a country where religion is excluded for the sake of inclusion, this brought the biggest smile to my face. Thanks I needed that. A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to ALL

Old Calendar is the Julian Calendar which is 13 days behind the current Gregorian Calendar. Thus, when the "Julian" Dec 25th rolls around, its the Gregorian Jan 7th.

Shawn I won't be blasting you, but agreeing with you on how we're inundated with Christmas music that starts playing even before Thanksgiving! I'm not sure I'm believing all this. Have I understood?: in the USA, "the land of the free", - with guaranteed freedom of speech and a First Amendment which keeps the government out of religion - you will be under threat from one group of citizens for using the expression "Merry Christmas" and from another set for using "Merry Xmas"?
You've got to be joking!

I'm surprised we haven't seen something like this yet:
ABC Corporation would like to wish you "Happy Holidays", respecting the tradition that you adhere to. This is a not binding salutation. You are in no way required to repeat this salutation or even acknowledge it but you are free to do so at your leisure. ABC Corporation will not be responsible for any legal ramnifications of you independently taking part of this non-binding salutation.
If you do not celebrate holidays at this time of year we do not intend this saluation to reflect on your belief or lack of belief. Should you wish to have a more strongly worded greeting worded in the tradition of your personal belief or lack of belief individual employees may take that action independently, provided they follow the guidelines of the Corporate policy on inclusiveness and respect.
ABC Corporation likes to respect the traditions and non-traditions of all customers, associates, and employees.

Normally, yes, however, its for my mother and there's very little she likes. ** Shawn

** Hi Patrick,
In a year that has "Christmas" as the 8th word you can't say on television, in a country where religion is excluded for the sake of inclusion, this brought the biggest smile to my face. Thanks I needed that. A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to ALL

Just a few comments on everything: Nothing taken personally- If I were going to do that, I wouldn't have made any comments in the first place ;~) Yes- the inundation is overbearing!! I would stop just short of saying it is being forced on those (which is where I believe, in all good intentions, the ACLU is coming from) Freedom of Religion & Speech is granted- for both everyone to say what they believe, and for everyone else to say what they think of those beliefs ;~) And if we want to get really technical on calendars, Christmas as Jesus's birthday isn't even in the right season! Happy Holidays to all! Old Calendar is the Julian Calendar which is 13 days behind the current Gregorian Calendar. Thus, when the "Julian" Dec 25th rolls around, its the Gregorian Jan 7th.
Follow the link below which describes in more detail the Julian and Gregorian Calendars http://www.hermetic.ch/calstud/calart.html#GregorianReform

Hey, now, we're OT enough - let's not get into religious discussions here. There's plenty of Yahoo! boards (not to mention boards filled with yahoos) that will discuss that to death. ;-) Merry Christmas to all (except to the ACLU, who get a mighty PPPPBBBBBBBTTTTTTHHHHHHH!!!, which they probably prefer anyway).

Enough of U.S.A. political issues please.
December 22:
Holidays for this date include... Army Day Vietnam Winter Solstice Holiday Hong Kong Asara B'Tevet Judaism
Since no public funds (of any country or currency) go into the making of the ARSlist, and it certainly is a home of free speech created by a Canadian in the most multi-cultural city in the world(and we're proud of it in Toronto):
Merry Christmas(Dec 25th or Jan 7th), Happy Solstice, Happy (belated) Hannukah, Happy Kwanzaa etc.....
Best wishes for a great Holiday Season (valid in most countries of the world)
and a Happy New Year for them that have the new year on December 31st.

When my freedom of speech is curtailed IE Merry Christmas every one and when my world changes when I grew up in New York state I prayed before each school day with my classmates and Pledged to the flag "One nation under God" and in our town square right dead center on the fountain near the five corners intersecting the village every year was dedicated a life size nativity and the lighting of the village "Christmas Tree" in the villages other park...now my five best buddy's and I would go to both right up to graduating high school and they would come over my house for Christmas and I would go over to their houses for there events ( all 5 where Jewish) I was the only gentile in our group. We were never offended but respected and were curious about each faith....some where reformed some orthodox, some conservative. Some of us are still communicating to this day. I remember football players that would "cross" themselves at touchdowns....a freedom of their own thankfulness to the God that gave them success...Social pressure is on us too try wandering though your job site wishing a Merry Christmas,,,,try putting a cross up in your cubical, even in some cases wearing one....my friend David (since childhood) was told to remove his yarmulke when he entered a big city court....the French law against headscraves works for yarmulke's as well...well enough this is a Friday to me as I won't work again till the 3rd so till then Merry Christmas, and happy other holidays and Happy New Year!

TEN REASONS WHY I BELIEVE IN CHRISTMAS Because when human beings do something cruel or mean to other human beings, there's always somebody who protests. Because babies are born. Because when a sea creature, dumb and almost insentient, forms a shell around itself, it makes mathematically perfect whorls and exquisite colors and the most gloriously complex patterns. Because when things are tough, there's always somebody who can make you laugh anyway. Because most of us feel guilty when we lie or cheat or steel. Because you can plant a sunflower seed in the ground and be sure that if anything comes up, and it probably will, it will most certainly be a sunflower and won't double-cross you and come up a petunia instead. Because of the way snow enshrouds the harshest city with marvelous soft white contours and mutes the city noises softly. Because if you open yourself to it, you can commune with animals and even plants and other forms of life we share this planet with. Because pain eventually goes away. Because even if some people believe it is a legend and not a precisely true event, I think the story of that baby in the manger, the angels, the shepherds and what it all meant to the world is still the most beautiful story I ever heard. - Patricia Curtis

I'm DYIN!
That's rich!
Thanks for bringing a little levity to the group.
And to the entire group, let me wish you all a Merry Christmas, and if that is not your holiday, then let me just wish that 2005 brings us peace.
May our world leaders see that war brings more war
May our religious leaders preach the TRUE meaning of the different religions...Peace, TOLERANCE, and love.
And may we as citizens of this tiny little blue ball learn to love and forget hate.
Now....can we get back to a little Remedy Programming? Someone asked a question about hovering over fields that I am dying to see an answer for!

No matter what our faith or beliefs, this is universally a time to raise a glass in celebration of what is, give thanks for what has been and nurture hope for what will be. Most of all it is a time for quiet contemplation and appreciation of what is really important in our lives.

Luv it: New excuse for being late for work - "Sorry, but the M1 was Santa-locked"
Perhaps the council in London could charge Santas a levey for being in the city between 7am and 7pm.

Thanks, Kris, for the only sensible thing I've read all week long.
Except, of course, for this: http://www.subgenius.com/
Hey, I just spent the last 2 hours shoveling snow, and it's still coming down. Looks like we're definitely getting a white Christmas in Ohio!

To our brothers and sisters of many varying beliefs around the world, Happy Holidays to you and those you hold dear in your hearts.
To Tee-umm, it just seems appropriate to wish an early Happy Valentines Day just to be different. The URL you included is blocked by the companies Smart Filter Control list. Seems that Smartfilter thinks the site contains some nudity.
