This link provides an answer to the question:

"Why do Russians celebrate Christmas on January 7th?"

In short if you can't open the link is...
Well, the reason is that the Russian Orthodox Church still lives according to the old Julian Calendar, which is currently 13 days behind the Gregorian Calendar,

Disclaimer: This is only the first source I've found. There may be a better or different explanation.

Enjoy,
Michelle

I won't be blasting you, but agreeing with you on how we're inundated with Christmas music that starts playing even before Thanksgiving!  I celebrate Christmas and I really do enjoy Christmas music, but I find myself hating it by the time Christmas Day rolls around.  I can understand playing Christmas music all day long on Christmas eve and Day, but before that... come on, it's a bit much!
My solution, I  change the radio station when a Christmas song comes on, except on Christmas Day.  Unfortunately, I can't do much about the in-store music, but that doesn't bother me much. I celebrate Christmas by the old Calendar ( which is Jan 7th in the current Calendar) thus I do all my shopping during the "after Christmas Sales" which by then the stores no longer pipe in Christmas music.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to All!

I don't mean to start a debate, and my specialty is in "PC" computers, not "PC" politics, and I most certainly don't take offense at people wishing me a Merry Christmas (I work phone support and this time of year its the last thing everyone says), however, I must say that some things are just overboard- I just got my mother a Satellite Radio. It has 1 channel for easy listening (I'm a bit shocked at this, but none-the-less). The provider has removed this one channel (along with 4 others) and is now playing nothing but Christmas music- there are at least 20 sports channels they could have replaced for this month- or better still, created a new channel for it, perhaps had one or two channels reserved for "seasonal"- marching bands for the 4th, love songs for Feb 14th, etc.

A lot of things seem to be like that it seems- don't get me wrong- I agree that its a huge shame everything is being taken so far (e.g. Christmas is a "bad" word), but I also don't see anything wrong with a "Happy Holidays!" either, especially when "Christmas" starts earlier and earlier every year- I went into one store in September and they already had their "Santa" stuff out.

And since I know I'm going to take heat for this one, Let the blasting begin ;~)

Indeed.  Everywhere we go, it seems that there's "Winter Holiday" this and "Seasonal Occurrence" that - but what holidays are celebrated this time of year?  Hannukah?  Sure - if I know someone's Jewish, I'll be glad to wish them a happy one.  Kwanzaa?  Well, I don't even know exactly how that's celebrated, but if that lights someone's candle, I wish them the best one possible.  For the other 95% of us in this nation, that holiday is Christmas.

Actually the 2nd Amendment is:

"A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free
State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be
infringed."

The First Amendment is probably the one you meant:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,
or
prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of
speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to
assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Shawn,

Bad radio programming is bad radio programming. Like the way Sirus
keeps moving around my favorites, I can't tell which channel month to
month. You would think that there would be a channel reserved for
Holiday music, religous or secular, at the very least... maybe give up
a sport channel, cause yes they have more sports than anyone has a right
to follow. After all, if someone needs to listen to all 20 sports
channels, then your friends and family need to do an intervention and
get you into a 12-Step program, or at the very least get them a date.
Its rediculous to take things to extremes in the name of inclusion. Last
I checked the 2nd Ammendment stated that the government can not
establish or promote a state religion. and that was because in those
fine days, if the King was Protestant, you had to be too. Thats a good
and fine law, thats why the pilgrims came here in the first place. But
it doesn't cover my not feeling a part of things at Christmas time cause
I am not religious. Sorry but if a holiday (and not just Christmas)
promotes Peace on Earth, and Good Will towards your fellow man, and it
makes you uncomfortable... deal with it. Cause no amount of legislation
can cure immaturity and intolerence

PS, this is not directed at you Shawn, just a general commentary.

I won't be blasting you, but agreeing with you on how we're inundated with
Christmas music that starts playing even before Thanksgiving!  I celebrate
Christmas and I really do enjoy Christmas music, but I find myself hating
it by the time Christmas Day rolls around.  I can understand playing
Christmas music all day long on Christmas eve and Day, but before that...
come on, it's a bit much!
My solution, I  change the radio station when a Christmas song comes on,
except on Christmas Day.  Unfortunately, I can't do much about the
in-store music, but that doesn't bother me much. I celebrate Christmas by
the old Calendar ( which is Jan 7th in the current Calendar) thus I do all
my shopping during the "after Christmas Sales" which by then the stores no
longer pipe in Christmas music.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to All!

I don't mean to start a debate, and my specialty is in "PC" computers, not
"PC" politics, and I most certainly don't take offense at people wishing
me a Merry Christmas (I work phone support and this time of year its the
last thing everyone says), however, I must say that some things are just
overboard- I just got my mother a Satellite Radio. It has 1 channel for
easy listening (I'm a bit shocked at this, but none-the-less). The
provider has removed this one channel (along with 4 others) and is now
playing nothing but Christmas music- there are at least 20 sports channels
they could have replaced for this month- or better still, created a new
channel for it, perhaps had one or two channels reserved for "seasonal"-
marching bands for the 4th, love songs for Feb 14th, etc.

A lot of things seem to be like that it seems- don't get me wrong- I agree
that its a huge shame everything is being taken so far (e.g. Christmas is
a "bad" word), but I also don't see anything wrong with a "Happy
Holidays!"
either, especially when "Christmas" starts earlier and earlier every year-
I went into one store in September and they already had their "Santa"
stuff out.

And since I know I'm going to take heat for this one, Let the blasting
begin
;~)

Indeed.  Everywhere we go, it seems that there's "Winter Holiday" this and
"Seasonal Occurrence" that - but what holidays are celebrated this time of
year?  Hannukah?  Sure - if I know someone's Jewish, I'll be glad to wish
them a happy one.  Kwanzaa?  Well, I don't even know exactly how that's
celebrated, but if that lights someone's candle, I wish them the best one
possible.  For the other 95% of us in this nation, that holiday is
Christmas.

Whether one is religious or not, 97% of the people in this country
celebrate Christmas in some way - why can't we wish someone a Merry one?
Why should we care if someone is so hyper-sensitive as to be offended by
our doing so? The ACLU can kiss my big, white, hairy...mitten, if they
think they can keep me from saying

Merry Christmas to All!

Old Calendar is the Julian Calendar which is 13 days behind the current Gregorian Calendar. Thus, when the "Julian" Dec 25th rolls around, its the Gregorian Jan 7th.

Follow the link below which describes in more detail the Julian and Gregorian Calendars http://www.hermetic.ch/calstud/calart.html#GregorianReform

I'm not sure I'm believing all this. Have I understood?: in the USA,
"the land of the free", - with guaranteed freedom of speech and a First
Amendment which keeps the government out of religion - you will be under
threat from one group of citizens for using the expression "Merry
Christmas" and from another set for using "Merry Xmas"?

You've got to be joking!
