At one point, our company had acquired an office in France that was on a
real Star Wars kick- I was able to enjoy working with Yoda, Luke, HanSolo,
and Chewbacca on a daily basis. Fortunately, I didn't have any dealings with
Jabba ;)

Well on the subject of server names instead of project names, the first
Remedy server I ever ran was "Cardasia". I imagined how happy Starfleet
Command must be every time I asked a sysadmin to "bounce Cardasia."

Also on the subject of project names:
In a previous life I remember reminiscing to a fellow developer how back
in college, when referring to any sufficiently complicated electronic
circuit, we would simply "black box" the process in overall explanation
and label it "PFM Interface"... Where PFM= Pure (Use your imagination)
Magic.

Imagine my surprise when years later I show up at a client site where
this individual had done development to find PFM**** forms... By the
same developer! To this day, the workflow stands in production, and the
developer SWEARS it stood for Performance Form Measurement...

Regards,
Herb

Or, to dig up an old classic Dilbert, you could have random name generator combine the lexicons of electronics and astronomy, providing such gems as Hertz Uranus. :)

So them you could have host names like Enema and Bypass with Liver or
GHOSTPLANT and Garlic with HORSE MINT.

One Remedy server I worked with was called Olivia because, we were told, the
original (Japanese) developer like Olivia Newton John!

Whenever I hear of a new Phoenix project (and there must be one in just
about every major Company) I laugh at the lack of project naming imagination
(sorry if you named such a project and you thought you were being original)

I tried to get my main Remedy system called by the project name but gave up
when everyone kept just calling it Remedy.

I can sympathize with everyone calling it 'Remedy'- we now have the 'Remedy Server' and everyone is even refering to each and every schema as simply 'Remedy'!

Shudder... That conjures up some nasty flashbacks.

I used to work at a place where the production server's name was
"remedy". The users called the application "remedy". They also called
the client "remedy". So they would call me up and say, "Tee-yum,
Remedy is down!"

We didn't have a Bert and Ernie, but I used to know one called
'Frankenstein'- this was actually a pretty accurate description of both the
server and its purpose ;)

August 3, 2004

Actually it is best not to have names that reflect the purpose of the
server, even though it would make our lives easier. We are currently in
the process of renaming all our Window servers (200+) to new names that
do not reflect their purpose. The naming convention is based on
something called the "Snow White Domain". (Can't find any reference to
it on the net)

We have a utility that we use that generates the next available name
from a dictionary of items. We just finished going through Auto names
and Weather.

The reason behind this all is that if someone hacks into your
network/system and the names of your servers help to determine what they
are, then they will quickly move to the ones that will either do the
most damage or benefit them the most. By knowing what type of server
they are dealing with, then they will also know what vulnerabilities
exist to get into the server. By using names that don't mean much, then
it would help to slow them down a great deal as they don't know what
they are dealing with.

I know of three other companies that have or are going though this same
process. This is mostly due to all the terrorism scares and stuff over
the last year and a bit.

I know that at our Call Centre, it has made it a lot harder to know what
is down when someone yells out that the server Birch or Elm is down. Now
we have to consult a spreadsheet to look it up. Was easier when someone
said that SYNDC02 was down and we knew that Domain Controller # 2 was
down.

I think everyone has a server named Bert and Ernie in their
environment...

Brent...
