Actually it is best not to have names that reflect the purpose of the
server, even though it would make our lives easier. We are currently in
the process of renaming all our Window servers (200+) to new names that
do not reflect their purpose. The naming convention is based on
something called the "Snow White Domain". (Can't find any reference to
it on the net)

We have a utility that we use that generates the next available name
from a dictionary of items. We just finished going through Auto names
and Weather.

The reason behind this all is that if someone hacks into your
network/system and the names of your servers help to determine what they
are, then they will quickly move to the ones that will either do the
most damage or benefit them the most. By knowing what type of server
they are dealing with, then they will also know what vulnerabilities
exist to get into the server. By using names that don't mean much, then
it would help to slow them down a great deal as they don't know what
they are dealing with.

I know of three other companies that have or are going though this same
process. This is mostly due to all the terrorism scares and stuff over
the last year and a bit.

I know that at our Call Centre, it has made it a lot harder to know what
is down when someone yells out that the server Birch or Elm is down. Now
we have to consult a spreadsheet to look it up. Was easier when someone
said that SYNDC02 was down and we knew that Domain Controller # 2 was
down.

I think everyone has a server named Bert and Ernie in their
environment...

Brent...

Over here all the servers are cryptic letters and numbers. I have a couple of sticky notes on my monitor to keep them all straight.

As for LOTR names, let's see, I'm betting Gandalf was the Production server(being so powerful and wise) - maybe Frodo (or Samwise) for the test server(since carrying the ring was a test of will/character/strength). I'm thinking Aragorn for the Training server(his infinite patience and his working towards being King). Finally Gollum for the Dev server, since it's usually a mishmash of code, with bits of this and that all over. And I'd call the users Pippen, 'cause they are always causing trouble getting into stuff they are supposed to... :-)

I looked at some old Remedy Beta shirts and found one with a Coyote on it
(ARS 4.0) and another with a Hummingbird on it (ARS 3.0?). I remember the
Futurama > NOT Futurama (copyright restrictions) among the most memorable.
Must have been a Fall/Winter release since both shirts are long sleeved and
one is a sweatshirt!

The problem with any names that look alike, or are unpronouncable is
that they end up being hard to tell apart. One site I know of had two
servers called something like AD11PQ1 and AD11PQ2.

People kept on getting them mixed up. If one server went down, then
there was always a flurry of activity throughout the building as
everyone, regardless of what server they were on saved files; there was
about a 40% chance that the administrator would powercycle the wrong box
first.

Give the servers silly names, and the order "Powercycle Dopey and look
to see if Sneezy is OK too" is much easier; pronouncable names don't get
so easily mixed up.

Just don't call a box anything like "unbreakable", "MI5" or "Mossad"; if
you do then every teenage twerp in the universe will instantly try to
break in just to see what's there...

Well on the subject of server names instead of project names, the first
Remedy server I ever ran was "Cardasia". I imagined how happy Starfleet
