an Informix database, and the maximum limit on that platform for diary
fields are 32,000 characters. I just received a call from one of my
users who discovered that limit. We could remove some of the notes, but
I do not know how to do this easily.

Anyone out there have any ideas?

Modify the exported file using an editor tool (delete parts of the diary)
Import the file back into the db having the option to replace duplicate
entry chosen.

Hope this helps.

Anyone know how to edit a full diary field? We run Remedy on top of
an Informix database, and the maximum limit on that platform for diary
fields are 32,000 characters. I just received a call from one of my
users who discovered that limit. We could remove some of the notes, but
I do not know how to do this easily.

product of running a 16-bit app. (Remedy 3.x) on Windows. Open up the
record in a UNIX client, where the limit on Diary fields is 64K. You can
then cut/paste just what you want to keep into another ticket, and close or
cancel the original one there.

Some editors handle Ctrl characters OK, but some don't. A carat and a D are not
the same as a Ctrl-D. Also, if you are editing it in vi on a UNIX box, you
might have a few problems because the diary field exceeded the maximum line
length for the editor. I use a GUI text editor on my UNIX box and have no
problems.

Of course, this whole technique is also useful when someone accidently drops a
Ctrl-C or Ctrl-D into the text of a diary field as they are typing (or cutting
and pasting).

the record with the import tool. I saw this tip on the list in March or April, but do not remember who
gave it.

I have used the import tool successfully, Use the report tool to export the
field to a file, edit the text and use the import tool to put it back. When
you import to a diary field, all data is in the diary field is replaced with
the data you are importing, it is not appended.

The problem is there can be no commas or double quotes in the text as they are
seen as field delimiters. I just did a search and replaced commas with
semicolons and double quotes with single.

A warning based on personal experience: DO NOT attempt to append an entry to
a diary field using the import tool! It wipes the entire field away! I was
converting data, area codes I think, and at the last minute before starting
the import decided to add a comment in the diary field explaining the
conversion. Big mistake!

I hope this helps Jeff

I have used export/import before, and noticed that the Update feature of
ARImport can allow you to update only those fields you are importing, while
preserving the unchanged fields in the record.

Anyone have experiences on this one???
